What if we traded up?

As I am sure you will be able to tell this is my first post on this site but I have lurked for numerous seasons just to read others input and opinions. I have never smacked on any one for their opinions even if I thought they were completely off the wall. But now I have a opinion/question for others to think or comment about. I am not for moving up in the first round in any way, but LaMicheal James could available in the late 2nd or early 3rd. Riveria already said we could use a scat back and I can't think of anyone who looks more like sproles then james. Also it could give us some serious trade bait with either williams or stewart. What does anyone else think?

I really think the FO is going to regret that nice fat contract they gave williams. I believe stewart is more of an everydown back and with the contract that williams has yet to live up to or will, wouldn't it make more since to push stewart up the depth chart and go for a scat back with a fraction the cost? Don't get me wrong I like williams and every knows he is a big contribution in the locker room as far as morale goes

THe last time we tried to trade up, we offered the Rams our first rounder in 2011 (Cam) for the 33rd pick in the 2010 draft so we could grab a QB named Jimmy Clausen. The Rams had a player in mind and did not deal. Whew.

The last time we moved up, it was to steal a small college qb who is 5'10" tall and turn him into a punt returner and 6th Wr on the depth chart. We gave away the 33rd pick in the 2011 draft. If we had not made the move, the colts were going to take him, we thought. Who have they drafted in the past 5 years worth a crap? Anthony Gonzalez?

I think other teams should be less concerned about us upgrading offense and more concerned when we get this defense fixed, once we can stop teams from putting up 21 or more than other teams are in for trouble. I doubt there is a team out there that can hold us under 21.

Jags, Titans, Saints, and Falcons disagree.

Link? I have yet to see proof that we offered our first but maybe I missed it

I cannot give you one, but Hurney was elated right after the draft and was talking on the radio about how he couldn't believe that JC fell, that the night between day 1 and day 2 he was on the phone with St. Louis trying to pry the 33rd pick from them.

The announcers compared the deal to the Everette Brown and Jeff Otah trade ups, and Hurney did not disagree. So, the connection is inferential, but when do we ever specifically hear about trades that never happened? You won't find a link, just a day after interview on WFNZ in Charlotte. I have to think that Hurney would have objected--I think he wanted people to think we got a first round talent in the second round. If you think about it, he made the same deal to get Armanti Edwards, trading a 2nd rounder in 2011 for a mid-third rounder. It had become Hurney's MO, and few doubted that the first in 2011 for the 33rd pick in 2010 was on the table, even though other picks would have certainly been involved.

The Rams were dead set on landing a LT to protect their new $70 million QB, coming off injury at Oklahoma. They felt that Roger Saffolt, LOT was a steal at 33. The Panthers had nothing to offer to move up that far, and the Rams did not want to wait a year to protect their QB. Had a LT not been on the board, one that was high on the Rams' board, they Panthers may have closed the deal. But there were other offers. Hurney would have to be rather competitive to move that far, and he felt that a first round QB was sitting there. If he traded a first for Brown, would he not trade a first for a franchise QB? Of course, there would have been other picks to make the deal a bit more fair, but these details were never discussed. However, Hurney did not deny offering the first round pick in 2011 as part of the package, something the announcers seemed to accept as a given.

They had nothing else to offer since St. Louis was looking for players in 2010 and not the following year.

This suggests there was activity: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft10/news/story?id=5130675

You are not going to find articles written about deals that never happened. It is interesting, however, that Saffolt (per RotoWorld) was rated the fifth worst LT in the NFL before going to IR this season.
