Should we resign Shockey?

I love internet gangstas. Punks like to talk big on message boards. Anyway, to further the discussion, I think shock is great for the team but this team is young and building. 2 years of development for dwayne allen or 2 years of shock getting first downs on most of his catches. There are a lot of times that he should have gotten a lot more out of his catches. I would rather have the first down with YAC. Remember what jermichael finley did to us?

I love people who can't contribute anything to a conversation but an irrational opinion and labeling people "internet gangstas"...

when our team's BIGGEST need is defense and Greg Olsen (a TE that can stretch the field like Finley) is already on the roster: You sign your valuable, productive veteran and address it later..

basically what I'm saying is, if you think "can he run for a TD every time?" is the question our coaching staff is asking, you may be off the charts clueless at this juncture...

what is more important is that Shockey has proven he can break tackles, make 1st downs, score TDs, stay healthy, and help elevate the winning attitude that was obviously lost with this team in years past..

you don't get rid of solid production for "potential" just to make your madden experience more enjoyable...

Q: I'd like to throw out some names and ask your opinion.

Wide receiver Brandon LaFell?

RICHARDSON: I think he's got great potential and I think David Gettis does as well.

Q: Armanti Edwards?

RICHARDSON: He's in a strange spot because he's not getting a chance to play, primarily because of the two guys we brought in from the Chargers. We're not going to know until he gets playing time, real playing time.

Q: Chris Gamble?

RICHARDSON: I think he's extraordinary. His tackling's improved. I think our whole team's tackling has to improve.

Q: Sherrod Martin?

RICHARDSON: What about him?

Q: What do you think about him?

RICHARDSON: I think he plays safety.

Q: Steve Smith?

RICHARDSON: He was fabulous.

Q: DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart?

RICHARDSON: I can't imagine that you could have two better running backs for our team from those two.

damn if that's not telling... even AE got a decent response..

Just found this forum, been looking since Carolina Growl took a dump. I was actually searching for news on this topic. Shockey has to stay!! I think with what he brought to the team, it made us a lot more dynamic. I believe the majority of our playmakers need to stick around. The same offensive team we had on the field this year, will be greatly improved next year. We do need another WR, unless LaFell and Gettis come back Stronger, but we have 2 of the most Solid TE's in the league with Shockey and Olsen. I see many more things clicking on the right cylinders next year.

I call all people who like to curse people out on message boards internet gangsta's. I promise you wouldn't do it if we were face to face. To everyone else, Look at jimmy graham, the TE's at NE, Gates, and gonzalez. That position can impact the game more than most because the right player can create an unfair mismatch. Too fast for LB's and too big for a safeties. That is the way the league is going.

"To everyone else?"..... they can't help this make sense for you. you are directly contradicting yourself like no one has a clue about the TE position.. you're late, we all know. and guess what, Gonzo is a close representation of Shockey..

Olsen stretches the field.. too fast for LBers, too big for Safeties.. you mean our fans don't already know that? LOL

with that said, defense is high priority... catch up son... CATCH UP!

Its a discussion. We are not bronco fans and you either have to love a player or you are wrong. I know defense is the priority. However, if you didn't notice, this is a thread about the TE position. I'm talking about building for the future. If shock can lead us to a superbowl next year he is the choice. If we get there in 2 or 3, he is not.

your original point was:

Only on the cheap. You have to ask yourself an honest question. When shock catches a pass do you think "He might take it all the way"? You don't. This team is young. We need to develop talent for the long haul. Trade back and get dwayne allen our of clemson

and then I think to myself the times I've seen Shockey break tackles, somehow land on his feet and score a TD.. all the 1st downs he helped contribute.. then I see your post saying "do you think he might take it all the way?"

well yeah, actually.. but aside from that, the dude isn't in a wheel chair and is a crafty vet who can break tackles, score TDs, and get 1st downs.. Chances are HIGHLY likely he'll be here for 2-3 years and in that time I hope our staff has someone for him to mentor aside from Olsen.. (doubt Barnidge is that guy)

if we can find a Jimmy Graham under the radar, pick him up..

people disagree on here all the time, but all too often do a select few want to totally disregard production for potential.. You may or may not fall in that category, but you have to admit your post isn't going to be the outcome of the situation. In both instances, Shockey will most likely be here for 2-3 more years and he's managed to break tackles to score TDs and help the team get 1st downs.. And THEN you throw Gonzo's name into the mix like Shockey isn't in the same boat, yet both are still productive...

you can say "pick up Dwayne Allen", reality is not that cut and dry.. do we pass up a nice playmaker for the D when TE is already a strength? do we get out in front of another team who intends to pick him? if so do we trade up? does he fall to us with good value or are we trying to reach for him when D is important?

Ideally, I get what you're saying.. My point is Shockey is a very good option when we have another year or two in finding a replacement.. saying Shockey isn't a threat contradicts everything we saw this year, dude can STILL stretch the field..

    • I mean that’s not an argument I go with… But in ACC play, both Clemson and SMU covered the spread more than Miami.  Miami didn’t cover in 3 games.
