They just spent a billion dollars building a toll road up here in Maryland. The road will generate about $30-$50 million a year in revenue, but with snow removal, maintenance, and the police force they created just to patrol this stretch of road, there is no way they'll ever break even.

In essence, the users of the road are being taxed twice. Their tax dollars were used to build a toll road that will never fully fund itself and they're being charged to drive on it.

I oppose the Monroe 74 Bypass and the HOT lane going up 77 to Lake Norman for this reason. Tolls discourage people from using roads (unless there truly no other realistic alternatives) so you end up with a project that never pays for itself that is underutilized and does nothing to solve the congestion problem it was originally developed to solve. You then end up with a billion less dollars in the bank and a main thoroughfare(s) that is/are still congested and more infrastructure to repair and patrol.

Some account services party has to mail bills to each patron and then collect on those bills. Gas tax just seems more efficient.
