J-Stew - What do we do?

As much as I'd hate to do it...under the new rookie salary cap pay structure, it's smarter to replace a player like Jstew (shorter shelf life) than it is to pay out a huge contract. Especially a second one. That's why I threw the floater of franchise Stew to then trade him...and draft Trent under the new salary guidelines. Cheaper with larger upside. Not a need, but a stud RB (two Heismans in a row) and open up more options in the draft if we can garner picks a 2nd and a conditional 3rd maybe?

Put the love for particular players aside and think "what would New England do".

Franchise Stewart after next year so we'll have him for sure for two more years. Then sign him to a deal after his franchise tag runs out and let Deangelo walk OR restructure his deal to free up cap room. Neither one of these guys has high volume carries so they probably have 2-3 extra good seasons because of that.

One thing that you cannot do is give Deangelo a boatload of money and then let the younger and more promising Stewart walk away. Just can't let that happen. Hurney made his decision to give Deangelo a huge contract and he can't change that but don't compound the mistake my letting the more versatile/younger RB walk away

For the good of the team I hope we trade him and make the team better. Name a te am in the playoffs that have two hugely paid rbs. Most don't even have one paid like dwill, much less two. They spend money on other team needs, like say someone on the defensive side of the ball.

I hope the panthers one day start acting like a real organization where winning is valued.

hurney made a mistake by dropping a boatload of cash on williams....but he did a good job of frontloading the contract. williams will make around 10 million next season, and be dirt cheap for the remaing seasons.

stewart will play out next season under his rookie contract. after that, if he decides to stay/carolina decides to keep him, williams's won't be the ridiculous cap hit then like it is now.

carolina can sign him and keep williams, they just need to wait until the last second to do it.

We will pay Stewart and sign him long-term. There has not been anyone who we wanted to keep and didn't have the money if they wanted to stay here. Obviously if they want to go elsewhere then he will. But given that we have such a strong run game paying for 2 feature backs actually makes sense. If we do get rid of anybody it will be Wiliams not Stewart but honestly I doubt it comes to that unless Rivera convinces Hurney he doesn't need both of them.

Other playoff teams spend their money on positions like quarterback who makes twice as much as our running backs put together. Since Newton is on a rookie contract for another 3 years we have flexibility they don't. Besides we don't have 2 hugely paid running backs either. Stewart is on his rookie contract and will be through next year when we make the playoffs.

As for defense the issue hasn't been being cheap as evidenced by signing Beason, Anderson, and Johnson to long term deals but injuries.

Seems to me your post doesn't speak to being a mistake but actually planning things with the idea of paying Stewart in 2 years and either having the flexibility to keep Williams or let him go with little cap hit. It sounds like a good plan to me.

Honestly both Williams and Stewart averaged 5.4 yards per carry which was in the top 5 of running backs with a minimum of 100 carries. And between them they got 1600 yards rushing and another 500 yards receiving. Given Newton ran for 700 and passed for 4000, it seems the running game did very well for us as we set a franchise record for most total yards on offense.

but that's it.....in today's NFL and with the team we are building it is flat out full retard to invest heavily into 2 starting caliber RBs. We don't need to give both RBs big contracts and have both on our roster. Not money well spent.

giving Stewart a top contract and keepig both would be compounding the mistake already made. If Stewart is healthy, give him a deal and cut what will then be an older Williams. Go find a cheap RB who ideally fits the scheme to work with Stewart.

Stewart has the potential and ability to be greatest RB this franchise has ever seen. He should be resigned. Me thinks Deangelo will restructure eventually. He has no leverage in negotiations.

He can look around the league himself and see what happens to backs approaching early 30's. He will want to stay on the team because we will be contenders very soon.

I think there will be room to sign Stewart assuming they can get him for a reasonable price. If he decides to try to maximize his value then we probably trade him or let him walk but I don't think that will happen. If nothing else, they can give him some of the money Thomas Davis was supposed to get prior to his latest injury.

    • I like that a lot; Ware from Troy and also Khalil Mack who played at University of Buffalo
    • I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛
    • bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
