J-Stew - What do we do?

I know I will get serious hate for this but I would trade him and sign Hillis (assuming we could get him for reasonable amount). I see no way we resign Stewart after the contract we just gave Dwill. It would be nice to get something in return out of him (a 2nd is within the realm of possibility). Hillis was a beast last year and he could make a rebound with the strong supporting cast we have. This is assuming he doesn't command an arm and a leg.

What makes you think we won't be able to sign Stew but will be able to sign Hillis?

did i say we were a running team? nope. i said have the most dominant run game in NFL history.

we can still be pass heavy and run the ball better than anyone. we won't have the most carries, but we'll do the most with them and our run game will get in the history books.

when your primary ball carriers, including your QB, carries the ball for 5.5+ a pop and you are the 3rd ranked team in rushing yards per game...you're going to have a dominant run game.

btw....this carolina passing team was 23rd on passing attempts, 18th in completions, and 13th in passing yards per game.

we ran the ball 445 times this year, and passed the ball 519 times (312 completed passes). the balance has shifted over to the passing game more, but we still have one of the best run games in the league. that won't change and it shouldn't. it ain't broke and it is actually working spectacularly well. no need to change it. just build around it.

I hope we use DWill and Stewart even more in the passing game next year. It will open up the passing game for our receivers and tight ends even more. It took some time for our backs to adjust from the traditional 2 back set. I would rather keep our 2 stud RBs than go fishing for more WR help ala Santonio Holmes, etc. Free agent WR pickups are way overrated. As for the defense, we can improve it with draft picks and free agency. We will not get an impact defensive player by trading our RBs. I would rather sign another OL ,DB and safety in free agency and keep our offensive skill players. I would rather fire Hurney than get rid of DWill or Stewart.

Hey guys,

Been pondering over what we should do with J-Stew and figured Id bring this thought to the Huddle. He is a FA after this coming season and with D-Wills contract, it got me thinking...Do we...

1) Re-sign J-Stew. Just wondering here if he is going to be looking for a D-Will type contract. If so, I dont know if we have the room. Maybe we can restructure D-Will and have the abilities to keep both.

there just isn't the money to both fill the needs we have everywhere and sign him to a long term contract extension with guaranteed money. Although, seeing as how this team likes to spend a disproportionate amount of money in certain areas (RB) while starving others of talent (DT), there's a possibility they lock him up this offseason.

2) Trade J-Stew this offseason. I dont like or want this option, but if a team is willing to give up a 1st for him, would you atleast consider it??

If a team is actually stupid enough to offer a first round pick for a running back in this league, we should go for it

3) Just keep him around one more season and let it play itself out. You never know whos going to have to be released or restructured or just how much money we will have then, so just hold onto him for one more season?

In lieu of someone offering said trade above, this is the best option to go with at this point.

I think the Panthers just began to scratch the surface of what this offense can do. I think Double Trouble will be here for some time. Unique situation for both. They will have longer careers. I would bet the Panthers want to keep them both. I say get it done Hurney.

I don't understand why people keep thinking D-Will is going to break down. He's not every other back. He's been splitting carries most of his career and hasn't had NEARLY the wear and tear of any other feature back.

I still think we don't have to worry about Stew as much. Not saying it's going to happen, but look at Matt Forte...I'd rather cross that bridge when we get to it. Keep him on, let him play.

We are not a running team. We are a passing team. The offense revolves around Cam Newton....NOT around the running game.

Ron Rivera has said it enough times that I don't need to try to argue it. The offense isn't built around a running attack.

He said many times that we are a balanced offense. We are gunna use both aspects effectivly when needed. He never said were gunna be one dimensional bud.

From a cap perspective, it doesnt make sense to spend big money on 2 RBs when you're only giving them 150 carries each. To put it in perspective, MJD and Turner both carried the ball more than JStew and Deangelo combined this year.

That being said, we spent 1st round picks on them, and you dont want to give away that kind of investment (and neither of them would get much in a trade). I suspect that we re-sign Stewart to a back-loaded deal and put the problem off until later.

i dont know. i love jstew.

but if we knows for a fact that he's leaving after this season, we should trade him for anything. i would cry if he leave. one of my favorite all time panther.

For anything? I'd rather have one season of Stewart than a late 3rd or early 4th.

    • I like that a lot; Ware from Troy and also Khalil Mack who played at University of Buffalo
    • I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛
    • bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
