Name specific players for offseason Panther targets

Getting like an EJ Henderson I think would be a good move, he can play in Davis' place when he tears his ACL again and he can also play MLB if Beason is still banged up by the start of the season or at some other point.

As far as DT is concerned Fua and McClain should be get a chance to be on the team, but they didn't do a good enough job and we didn't see enough of Kearse and Shirley to convince us that we're fine there. Getting an Aubrayo Franklin, or Amobi Okoye, or even an Adam Carriker to play in the interior will help. It seems to me we just have a lot of guys that can work in a rotation but no guys that can be every down players you need in the middle.

I agree with this strategy 100%. Linebackers are relatively cheap, so this is a position where you can bring in quality without breaking the bank. CB can be addressed in the draft.

DT makes sense because nobody in this draft is overwhelming at that position. Franklin played pretty well in NO this year, and I'm not sure they will bring him back.

Like most, I want to see an upgrade at FS. Again, that is an affordable position in FA, so buy the best one you can.

Mario Williams is a pipe dream. Not gonna happen.

Brent Grimes. He would instantly fill a need, while also hampering the Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta doesn't have a very good pass defense right now, and taking Grimes away from that, and only leaving Dunta Robinson, would really put a hurting on their secondary.

I was thinking the same thing... as long as he leaves his dumb-a$$ wife here in Georgia. He's good and cheap (he is playing for $2.61 mil on a one year contract).

I seriously doubt we make any big moves. Maybe some mid-level guys at OLB, DE, or FS, but I expect us to take a CB in the 1st (likely Kirkpatrick) and then an OLB or FS in the 2nd.

Honestly, I'd rather go after a mid-level OLB with some upside in FA and use that 2nd rounder on Robert Lester. Kirkpatrick and Lester would do a lot to upgrade the secondary, but we'd still need to address the pass rush in FA, even if it's just a couple of mid-level pass rush specialists.

In any event, I wouldn't expect us to make any big moves. We don't have the cap space for one, and Hurney has gone out of his way to remind everyone that we're aiming to build through the draft. That's code for "don't get mad when we're quiet in free agency."

I could be wrong but I believe one reason why our defense sucks so bad is because they don't know the play book that well. I mean how many times have we watched players especially safeties get lost? maybe a full off season will help? Another reason why our defense sucked so bad was missed tackles. Getting Beason back will really help and we will probably sign a linebacker unless Davis comes back which as much as I want it to happen I think the chances Davis returns are slim to none. The next problem with our D is DT and CB. We could get a good CB in the draft in the 2nd round. I think we will be okay at DT with Edwards coming back and Kearse and Shirley could be a starter. I believe that our rookie DT's will be better next year with an offseason to train. The question is how much will they improve?

I think we can still improve on Defense. Rivera Mentioned us needing a Scat back. Maybe we will draft one? I would love for us to get Blackmon but I don't know if he will be available when we get our pick. I think we could probably get a good WR in the second and improve our D with the 1st round pick.

I would love for us to improve our Offensive line next season. I know its not the number one priority but I would love to see us improve our Line for Cams sake. Hopefully Otah will finally be healthy next season but if not we must draft someone the next draft. I feel that Bell could be our starter for at least next season. Schwartz will be back next season as well and I believe he will be better that Hanggartner

We should look first at upgrading our defense. We don't know how IR players will be next year. Our offense scored more points than most of the teams in the league. Look how we upgraded our TE positions with shipping out our borderline players and bringing a couple of veterans (Olsen, Shockey). We could instantly get better on defense with a good draft and a couple of young defensive veterans in key positions. I would also look at the kicking situation. I hated losing Kasay, and Mare didn't show me much. Pray we keep Chud, and I would look at Polian to replace Hurney !

I don't know if I like the idea, but the Jets are planning on releasing Bart Scott. He probably could be had for a cheap contract, and could be a decent pass rusher, but, I don't know well how he and Beason or Anderson would mesh.

I am really thinking Wharton could be released/reworked.

He is due almost 12 millon combined over the next two season in base salary.

Might could draft a guard in the second, hell maybe if we go BPA get the Stanford guard in the first, if we trade down.

Not that I am advocating that, just putting options out there.

Other than Wharton, who I think is a fine player, I don't such much obvious money saving moves.

I am not going to pretend to have a good performance evaluation of Wharton because I don't have coach's film. But, if we could replace him with Hangman or Schwartz then we might be able to get a bigger name on the defensive side.

Obviously, the coaches are going to have to decide if he provides 6 millon dollars of performance.

The team could easily free up 25-35 million in room by restructuring/extending 4 players. The cap numbers are for next season.

Wharton (extension or cut, 3 years left on his deal) 8 million cap hit.

Smith (extension, Last year of his deal) 9+ million cap hit

Gross (extension, 3 years left on his deal ) 10+ million cap hit

Gamble (Extension, 2 years left on his deal) 9+million cap hit.

According to RnR's cap space post, if we release Wharton, we save around 6 million.

Travelle Wharton, OG.........$8,100,000 ($2,400,000)

If there was someway that Hurney could restructure that to around 4 million a year, we would save 4 million+ from one player.

That's correct, but the team can move 1 million of it to 2013 or spread it out over the remainder of his deal if they cut him. So his cap hit would be 1 million and they would save 7. If they restructure him, they could probably get that down to 4-5 million easily. If the team restructures/extend Wharton, Gross, Gamble and Smith, the team could save upwards of 30+ million this season. However, the Team would be hit hard with restructures in 2014-2015 and owe around 50+ million in cap hits + salary to just 4 payers.

It's something they'll have to do though

I'm not for releasing Wharton. We are just creating another hole that way.

I agree.

In my dream scenario, we would trade/release Otah, restructure contracts, sign Brent Grimes, somehow sign Mario Williams (which I know will never happen, thus the "dream scenario") draft Jonathon Martin of Riley Reiff with our first pick, draft a OLB with our second pick.
