Despite what Hurney preaches on the radio, it would be foolish not to look at these younger guys.

I am 100% on board with building with the draft, HOWEVEA its easier to do that when you have fewer holes than we do.

Even the mighty super drafting Packers added Woodson as a free agent. Look how thats working out.

it is better to build through the draft, but only for the most part. Sometimes you gotta spend some cash in FA. It's not a good idea to just fill the team with vets that are going to get old very quickly but purely building through the draft leaves you vulnerable to keeping people that just aren't up to par because you really really think they're going to come around at some point. Getting like an EJ Henderson I think would be a good move, he can play in Davis' place when he tears his ACL again and he can also play MLB if Beason is still banged up by the start of the season or at some other point.

As far as DT is concerned Fua and McClain should be get a chance to be on the team, but they didn't do a good enough job and we didn't see enough of Kearse and Shirley to convince us that we're fine there. Getting an Aubrayo Franklin, or Amobi Okoye, or even an Adam Carriker to play in the interior will help. It seems to me we just have a lot of guys that can work in a rotation but no guys that can be every down players you need in the middle.

I'm curious if San Diego is a better spot than Carolina at this point.. If Garay had to choose, wouldn't Cam Newton and Ron Rivera be a better opportunity next year than Rivers and Norv? (assuming Turner keeps his job)

I agree, Garay would be ideal and maybe looking out of SD. Would be nice. Ron Edwards<<<<<<Garay.

I still like the idea of Grimes more than any.

Picking up Grimes allows us to hamstring Atlanta, bolster our own defense, and, I think the biggest thing of all, allow us to pick Jonathon Martin or Riley Reiff with our 1st Draft pick. Thus, Gross could move to RT, and we could be set on OL for a long, long time.

Then, we could somehow move Otah, try to get a pick of any kind out of him, and free up even more money.

Hurney's last big splurge into FA came in 2005. He sign 3 big name guys on the market in Mike Wahle, Ken Lucas and Freddie Jones. Jones never played a game in Carolina retiring after signed him as a restricted FA. Wahle and Lucas both had pretty good seasons in Carolina but when they left, somewhat surprisingly, the word leaked out that the lockerroom hated both players and caused a lot of tension.

In one article that came out after Lucas and Wahle were cut several players talked about the chemistry of teammates who come in a draft picks or unknown players compared to guys who come in as high profile FA.

I'm not saying any of this justifies not signing FA. But just a different look a the makeup of a team beyond just "sign player x". This younger team is also a lot different than the veteran driven team back then so that type of infussion could be good now. But I think you still have to take a look at locker room dynamics when signing FA.

Looking back at some of our playoff teams, some of the stars for those teams were free agent pick ups. Stephen Davis helped fuel our offense to the superbowl. Ken Lucas helped sure up the defense in 2005, and we made it all the way to the NFC championship game. Even in 1996 Sam mills, Lamar Lathon, Kevin Greene and those boys fueled us to the NFC championship.

This year, our whole defense was our draft picks, and I believe that is one of the reasons why we sucked so bad this year. (I know Beason and Davis went down, but still) Capt Munnerlyn, Sione Fua, and even Terrell Mcclain had no business in starting NFL games. Greg Hardy is good, but not great. And Sherrod Martin has really regressed to the point of being released.

Who knows, perhaps one day all of our starters will be draft picks, setting a personal team record. Yet until that time comes, Hurney needs to bring in proven talent, and let draft picks develop.

And why would two so-so experiences with players erase the benefits of having guys like Brentson Buckner or Mark Fields or Ricky Proehl? Or even Delhomme? The problem with that mentality is it lends people to think there's nothing worth going into FA for. I don't want to abuse FA because that doesn't work either, but some pickups that don't cost a lot can become invaluable presences.

There are options out there. And many of them aren't expensive. Adding Naanee and Shockey, even Greg Olsen helped this offense rebound in a hurry, and two of them cost barely anything. If we want the defense to make the same kind of improvement this offseason, we're going to have to take the same approach, and it's not going to break our bank. It'll help making decisions during the draft easier as well. I don't mind having guys grow because you need that a lot, but let's not overdo it to the point it's costing us wins in 2012. This year was a development year. Come November, I don't want to see us still giving up 150 yards against the run every game because Fua is starting and he still needs to "grow into the position and learn how to wreak havoc at the point of attack".

And lol Wahle wasn't even a great fit to begin with. He was one of the best pulling guards in the league when we signed him to block for a north/south running philosophy.
