CarPanfan Mock draft V 3.0

Give me Tramain Thomas in the 6th instead, plus anybody but Coples in the 1st

I actually seriously thought about him there, but went with Young and his potential.

1st round David DeCastro OG- hurney said we would go with the best player and he migtht be it at 8

2nd round Bacarri Rambo FS- we need a ballhawking FS and Martin just isn't cutting it

4th round Nigel Bradham OLB- had a great bowl game and could develop into a starter depending on the TD situation

5th round Cam Johnson DE- good edge rusher we could stand to add some speed to our pass rush

6th round Mike Martin DT- probably won't last until the 6th round buy watching him in his bowl game shows how good he is against the run and just eats up blocks

I don't like DeCastro that high, DE and DT will be addressed earlier then that. Either in FA or with one of the first 3 picks. I'd like an WLB with a bit more speed to make up for Anderson in coverage. As for the the Rambo selection, Why? When in the Second round Martin and Henry will still be available and both are rated higher then Rambo.

You don't draft an OG in the top ten, so forget DeCastro.

Agreed. I think he would be a great value pick around 14th or so.

Maybe not OG, but LT may work there.

I really like Reiff. I think he's the best OT prospect in this draft because of his hip fluidity and quickness.

The reason I went with Coples, is the Panthers need defensive upgrades at every position and he's the BPA at 8 or 9. I really don't like Kirkpatrick unless he shows more speed then is anticipated. I think he's going to hurt his stock at the Combine with a 4.56 or so.

Of course a lot will change after the Combine and pro days are completed and it's still pretty much a toss up for the top ten because of the Indy situation.

Right now there's only a handful of prospect's that have the grade to fit value wise at 8th or 9th overall. Coples, Still, Perry, Kirkpatrick, DeCastro, Martin, Reiff, and possibly Floyd.

I don't like Floyd, DeCastro or Kirkpatrick that high in the draft and Kirkpatrick might not make it there. That leaves Martin, Reiff, Coples, Perry and Still.

Martin is the biggest reach of that second bunch as the third rated tackle (also the most athletic of the three as well). Perry's a bit undersized at 6-3, 260, but has great value. The four guys that are value picks at 8th or 9th overall right now are Coples, Reiff, Perry or Still.

("For those that question Perry being that high, he's moved up to around the 6th-10th overall rated prospect in this draft")

Not if there is value at a position of greater need. But if not, and you have a chance at a Steve Hutchinson type of player (which is what DeCastro is being projected as), then you jump on it. Forget where you take him, just look at who would have the greatest impact on your team. And if all of the big time players that fit need positions are gone (which there is a very good chance they will be), a pro bowl level guard becomes good value.

As a for instance, NO doesn't have the greatest of OLines from left to right. It's the play of the guards that makes them go. Without Nicks and Evans, Brees will be either on the run or on his back too often to break any kind of passing record. So if you look at the value they bring to the team, it is as much as any high first round pick...no matter where they were originally taken.

Also, remember that previously one big reason for not overdrafting a position was the cost of a high pick in the draft. With the new CBA, that becomes less of an issue, so teams can now take the player that they feel will help them most without fear of grossly overpaying them. So, the bottom line is that if you have a choice of a bunch of nice players that should be good, solid guys but may not be superstars, and an expected long-term starter with multiple pro bowls, you take the better player...regardless of whether or not that position has traditionally been taken high.

Yeah, I'm a UNC fan too, not sold on Coples at all.

If we're looking at pass rushers, Whitney Mercilus has a great combination of speed and size, plays hard every game, plus has a fun last name (Mecilus-ly getting after the QB)

Might have to trade down to get him, but if Coples' stock drops more, and a good combine for him, you can see him possibly rise to the top 10.
