Bears ST coach Dave Toub

I'd throw a ton of cash at him, but we also hired a former assistant of his last year and that might make him not want to come here if the move would end up demoting/putting one of his former assistants out of work.

Sorry. Not quite true.

We were rumored to be interested in his assistant ST coach, but instead wound up hiring Brian Murphy. The coach we hired away from the Bears was DL coach Eric Washington.

Toub was one I'd have loved to get, and still would. He's getting an interview for a head coaching spot elsewhere though (someone thinking he could be the next John Harbaugh).

Is there a Toub/Rivera connection?

I can't remember.

They worked together for six years.

From 2001 to 2003, both were coaching in Philly.

In 2004, they both went to Chicago. Toub's been there ever since. Rivera left in 2006.

Had he not been under contract last season, I think it would have been no shock to see Rivera go after him. This season? Depends on how he feels about Brian Murphy.

I'd have to re-check, but if memory serves Murphy's history with Rivera was one of the weakest. Possibly the weakest.

So you are saying the coach doesn't matter? I'm putting my application in tomorrow to all 32 teams!

Seriously, coaches do make a difference. Give Scotty O'Brien and Danny Crossman the same rosters and you would see totally different results.

I don't think Rivera makes any changes in staff, but to say Toub would not make a difference is wrong, imo.

Uh.. Danny Crossman was a horrible special teams coach. If he were still here, we would probably be looking at exactly the same results.

Don't think he meant that Crossman would be better than Murphy. Just using those two to say that coaching makes a difference.

I think it would be silly to seriously argue that coaching makes no difference. I can see my way clear to giving a little leeway this year because of our injury situation but if a clear upgrade at the coaching position presents I'd like to see us at least look.

No way we would get him because the first thing he would want to do is replace Edwards at PR. Hurney is not going to let that happen...

What? AE is a waste of space. Who cares if he drafted him, if he sucks he sucks... end of story.

Hurney let go of Everette Brown, a guy for whom he gave up a first round pick, because he wasn't getting the job done.

Knowing that, why would you think he won't let go of a guy for whom he only gave up a second rounder?

In all honesty I think he would if he had too. I think he justified Edwards this year because of Capt. playing CB2 but next year I hope we have a better CB2 on the team.

If Toub doesn't get a head coaching job, I have faith that Lovie and the new Bears GM will do what it takes to retain him. He's not exactly "unemployed," as the Bears will have the right to match or beat any offer made to him. Any idiot can see the value that Toub holds and I know Lovie and the Bears FO do.

This has turned out to be an outstanding deal for the Panthers thus far, as Mingo totaled a mere five catches for 46 yards in eight games with Dallas this year.
