hurney is not horrible. he's had a few boners going after guys that ultimately turned out to be terrible - what GM hasn't? - but he more than makes up for it with an impeccable history of first round draft choices, plenty of grabs in the third and fourth rounds, several notable steals in later rounds, infrequent but effective action in free agency, and a vastly underrated knack for maneuvering under cap space. and he drafted cam newton.

Maybe Hurney has a few decent drafts but the Cap Space expert thing is just crazy.

The Panthers were completely handcuffed for 2 years while Hurney pumped 17 million plus dollars into an under motivated DE's bank account.

The Julius Peppers Franchise Tag debacle can only be rivaled by the Sean Gilbert deal as the worst moves in Team hstory.

the pep situation is forgivable when you look at what the team tried to do and what they thought was going to happen with the situation. after pep posted a loser season in 2007 fox and hurney were put on the hot seat in a private meeting with JR and then proceeded to blow make changes in personnel that created the best offense in years.

it took the pressure off the defense, and in turn the defensive schemes were switched up dramatically, with special roles being designed for pep, who was allowed to drop back into coverage and play to his strengths (his supposed desire to play as an OLB in a 3-4 probably played into this attempt to fulfill him.)

obviously nobody expected delhomme to implode and the offense to tank, and that's exactly what happened, and to me that's what iced pep wanting out.

given what hurney knew at the time, franchise tagging him and expecting him to sign a long term deal was the right thing to do, especially when pep was giving indications that he wanted to stay. if hurney knew then what we all know now of course he wouldn't have done it. hindsight's a bitch.
