2009 NFL Draft

Ideally you want to build as much as possible from the draft, it's cheaper and usually breeds a more loyal player base. However, it's unrealistic, if you get three starters out of any one draft it should be considered a successful draft. Hurney, and anyone with a brain, realizes that you have to add select players from FA. It takes a combination of both draft and FA to build a winner, you can't just rely on your draft and not spend money like Tampa, and you can't just rely on FA like the Eagles, it simply doesn't work.

People bitching about failed draft picks and making a case for Hurney sucking are, in general, fuging stupid. Compared to almost every GM around the league, Hurney stacks up favorably when comparing homegrown drafted talent. Look at any other teams draft and you won't find A SINGLE TEAM that averages more than three long term starting players every draft.

2010 wasn't all that great either

2011 outside of Cam looks pretty weak as well

Based off of draft position and how early they've had success. I'd say that Lafell and Gettis were pretty damn good picks. Hogan played really well when he hit the field, it wasn't a home run swing. The kid fell from being a borderline first round talent into the 4th round, of course you take him.

The point is, Hurney spent a pick on Hogan knowing he would not make any significant contribution this year. Teams can afford this luxury when their roster doesn't have a lot of holes. That certainly wasn't the case with us.

Hogan may turn out to be a great pick, but he will be going into his 2nd year and we still don't really know what we have yet.

For the total length of his tenure, Hurney has been okay. However, 2009 and 2010 were poor drafts and that is one of the reasons we are so talent deficient on D.

2005 was wretched too, despite having 10 picks.

Thomas Davis (great IF healthy)

Eric Shelton (super bust)

Evan Mathis (did nothing when he was here)

Atiyyah Ellison (uhhhh)

Stefan Lefors (lol)

Adam Seward (see a trend yet?)

Geoff Hangartner (good pick for a compensatory 5th rounder)

Ben Emanuel (who?)

Jovan Haye (did nothing for us)

Joe Berger (who?)
