Racist picture on the Observer?

I don't think its racist nor the intent was.

However why approve this picture? It just opens yourself up to people interpreting it the wrong way... but I guess any publicity is good publicity? (even if that wasn't the intent)

u're kidding right?

Maybe you need to ask that black hockey player who had a banana thrown at him during a hockey game last season what's the association of a banana and black people. I'm sure the person who threw the banana knew the meaning behind his act...:banghead:

I don't follow hockey and never heard about this incident. I just don't associate black people and bananas and can't believe there are very many that do.

Given the implied association that is being discussed here between black people, bananas, and monkeys, the only individuals that would make that connection would be like KKK level hard-core racists.

Racial biases certainly still exist, but the vast majority of people have at least moved beyond that level of stupidity and hate. For that reason, the vast majority of people wouldn't give the Observer picture a 2nd thought. And that's a good thing.

Bananas and racism have been linked for so long in our culture that I am unsure if people don't actually get the reference or are just being obtuse. Earlier in the hockey season, Wayne Simmonds of the Flyers had a banana thrown at him as a racial slur.

If you need to have it explained to you, then you haven't been paying attention to racial discourse over the last hundred years. It's a base and degrading insult against black people and I am really surprised this one made it past the editor.

As somebody in the comments said, it would be just as bad if they showed Steve Smith trying to catch a watermelon or a bucket of chicken or some other convoluted way to try to express a flawed point.

Since monkeys supposedly like bananas throwing one at a black person is racist. Calling someone a "top banana" is completely different

Bets 96% of the ppl who don't understand the correlation of bananas and a black man joke is white. They're obviously calling him a monkey like racist call blacks and him playing in a historically racist state doesn't make it any better ...

You're right calling Cam top banana is obviously calling him a monkey and not a banana at all.

We're all African apes though. Monkeys have tails and are not as closely related to us as apes are. I must also mention that bananas taste good and are a healthy food.

I doubt anyone would be playing the race card if a photo of Jimmy Clausen with the Saltines logo on him was published by the Observer.

You say racial biases exist, I say all sorts of other biases exist. That's just life, get over it. People get discriminated against based on weight, age, skin color, skin health, teeth health, speech impediments, etc.

Maybe the person who made this photo is a racist and maybe they aren't. It's just a photo though. People intentionally make fun of The Golden Calf of Bristol's faith all the time. Pro athletes are fair game for this type of stuff. Maybe the Observer shouldn't publish it, who knows. They'll probably take it down if enough black people complain.

I saw this jackass post a picture of Cam drinking gatorade

yeah gatorade...the stuff they designed at the university of florida (hence the name gatorade)

the same place where cam played BEHIND The Golden Calf of Bristol

so basically they were trying to say The Golden Calf of Bristol is a better QB than cam. what a complete douchebag, right?

Jesus....the ignorance of some people is just ridiculous.

Those who do nothing but look for ANYTHING that they can construe as racist are what is wrong.

There is definitely racism (both ways) in our society....and that poo needs to stop.

But looking for racism in this picture (one saying Cam is the Top Banana and also playing on the Chiquita move to Charlotte) are fuging pathetic....and you know who you are.

Chill out! For the people who ahev never heard the phrase " top banana" (me) could definatly be mistaken. I guess since some of you dont understand how this could be racist ill explain...

Now, with all the talk recently about black Quarterbacks and their image.. this pic could send the message " Cam Newton is on top only when it comes to black quarterbacks"

Monkeys love bananas and black people are refered to as monkeys sometimes... and of coarse they arent gunna be too blatently racist about.

Again, after figuring out what the hell top banana meant i realize that it probably means nothing racial. Please excuse me and the rest of the youger generation cause i promise you youl never hear that come out of most anyone's mouth under the age of twenty. Someone please lock this thread because some people are gettin their panties wet over nothing. Jee wizzz
