Racist picture on the Observer?

Bananas and racism have been linked for so long in our culture that I am unsure if people don't actually get the reference or are just being obtuse. Earlier in the hockey season, Wayne Simmonds of the Flyers had a banana thrown at him as a racial slur.

If you need to have it explained to you, then you haven't been paying attention to racial discourse over the last hundred years. It's a base and degrading insult against black people and I am really surprised this one made it past the editor.

As somebody in the comments said, it would be just as bad if they showed Steve Smith trying to catch a watermelon or a bucket of chicken or some other convoluted way to try to express a flawed point.

I must be missing something here.

Can someone explain why bananas are associated with racism? I would maybe understand if Cam were latina but since he's not I don't get it.

u're kidding right?

Maybe you need to ask that black hockey player who had a banana thrown at him during a hockey game last season what's the association of a banana and black people. I'm sure the person who threw the banana knew the meaning behind his act...:banghead:

But Steve Smith did throw fried chicken in a Bojangles commercial with Jake. I think the intent here is pretty clearly benign, let's leave the outrage for when we have evidence of actual racist intent, rather than this gotcha crap.

All in context...you are perpetrating a stereotype and meaning that most don't adhere to. Saying that everyone should share it and acknowledge it is extremely short-sighted. This is getting ridiculous.

is it suppose to be racist against banana eaters? if so, then yes.. the racial bias against banana eaters has to stop.. just b/c someone likes bananas is no reason to belittle them or begrudge them..

when will all this banana fueled hate end lord? when?
