Bill Simmons' thoughts on the game/Cam

Next year, there will be ridiculous expectations from fans and media unrivaled. It will be interesting to see how this team responds to what certainly will be more exposure - which goes hand-in-hand with more scrutiny.

Truth. We will definitely be the sexy/trendy pick with a lot of analysts for a wildcard spot or even the division if we make the necessary upgrades. Luckily I really feel like we have a QB who will do nothing but thrive in the spotlight.

So far Cam is the best thing to happen to this franchise since Jake Delhomme. The thing is...he's a hell of a lot better QB than Jake. Not taking anything away from Jake. I'll always think of him as a great QB. I think if you ask Smitty and Moose and Hoover etc, they would say he was one of the best in his day (and obviously a god in the 4th quarter over a 4-5 year span). Not Hall of Fame material, but will be remembered as a great Panther.

But it is a new day! And it is Cam's day! This kid is by far the most exciting, gifted player to come out of college football maybe ever...and that's no exaggeration. I cannot believe my eyes when I watch #1 on the field. He is capable of making plays no other QB in the league can make.

I am also perhaps more impressed with his maturity and work ethic. THe "towel thing" aside, he has started to become a leader in the locker room and on the sideline. His dedication and preparation are admirable. Maybe he does have an inflated ego, but actually he seems like a pretty nice guy. He's good with the media (which is gonna be SO much bigger next season) and with the fans. And that smile! He is going to be the next Micheal Jordan if he keeps this up.

And he's a Panther! I'm usually pretty low key, but I am psyched about the Saints game, ths offseason, and next season.

"forgettable/lousy franchise"?

The Panthers gave a Super Bowl to the Patriots because John Fox went for two 2-point conversions that changed the trajectory of the game enough to where the Patriots could win with a field goal after John Kasay ignorantly kicked the kickoff out of bounds. They had the Patriots beaten.

Three years ago, the Panthers were 12-4, and picked by many to reach the Super Bowl before Delhomme self-destructed against Arizona.

Several years ago, the Panthers went to Seattle in the NFC Championship game, being picked by MOST OF THE SPORTS MEDIA to beat the Seahawks and face Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl. Of course they didn't.

This franchise made it to the NFC Championship Game in its second season, losing to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers, who defeated a Bill Bellichik-less, Tom Brady-less Patriots team.

"forgettable/lousy" suggests that the Panthers have never had ANY success, have no history. These lazy media guys today live in the moment way too much, which is why I despise most U.S. media, sports or otherwise.

In all fairness. Newton has brought national attention to the Panthers. Even with a losing record, the Panthers are getting more exposure than they did in '03 and '05. I think that's the point he was trying to make.
