Even sooner than some would have imagined, the Panthers appear to be headed in the right direction. A large part of the credit should go to April’s No. 1 overall pick, Cam Newton.

In short order, Newton has turned Carolina's offense from a popgun to a bazooka. Newton's performance this season will likely be enough to take home the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, too.

Last season, the Panthers finished dead last in the NFL in total yards per game, scoring an NFL-low 196 points and totaling a league low 16 offensive touchdowns. Those numbers seem like a distant memory with Newton running the show. While it’s one thing to get better it’s another to erase last year’s dismal performance in less than a season.

Consider these astounding numbers.

This season’s Panthers have totaled 5,936 total yards (395.7 YPG) in only 15 games (395.7 YPG), already more than 1,800 yards more than the team amassed all of last season (4,135) and nearly 140 yards per game more (258.4 YPG) than a year ago.
