RG3 should be the first pick...

Size? He is bigger than both Vick and Brees by almost 3 inches. Out of the top 10 passers this year he is just as tall or taller than 4 players.

That's his listed size. But colleges are notorious for exaggerating a players size. I've heard a few analysts wonder aloud if he is actually anywhere near as big as Baylor claims, so the combine will be big for him. In the NFL, the difference between 6' and 6'2" is huge for a QB.

I think that, with what we're seeing in San Francisco, Harbaugh can make even marginal QBs look good in his system.

Am I saying Luck is going to be marginal? No. But, with the transformation of Alex Smith, it makes you wonder if Harbaugh is just some sort of awesome QB coach.

i think it's both.

luck has pretty much a photographic memory and is just a really smart kid...smarter than most coming out of college anywhere. being a stanford grad says it all. he's able to transfer that intelligence and memory to the football field. he was given a lot of freedom with harbaugh because he earned it. luck deserves every bit of the hype he's gotten. this year dropped off a bit performance-wise, but considering the coaching staff he lost as well as the numbers of players he lost and you'd expect there to be a drop off.

luck is a player like manning that can be his own OC and call his own plays. the comments you quoted from harbaugh say he was doing that anyway.

harbaugh is also a great QB coach. he does a good job of preparing his talent, but he also has a good eye for spotting talent as well and getting the most out of it.

regarding alex smith...he wasn't really a marginal talent. he was the victim of a really bad situation that has lasted his whole career up until this season. he had to deal with a different OC and drastically different offensive system every year in the league and harbaugh is his 5th HC i believe. i can promise you that even peyton manning would have had a tough time dealing with that dysfunctional team. 49ers have had talent. the problem they had was bad coaching.

Maybe the best post of yours i've ever read.

concerning rg3 vs luck...i don't think a team could go wrong with either guy. both will be elite, imo.

i think luck is smarter, but that's no knock on RG3. both have good instincts. both are uber talented. griffin may be more talented. i think luck may be a safer pick, but not necessarily a better one and not by much at all. it just depends on what the team is looking for. if they are like the colts and just wanting someone to take over for peyton as far as being his own OC, then you take luck. RG3 will be like newton, though. he's someone you could stick with any system and do well, though the more creative the system he's in and the more freedom he's given, the better he'll do.

both guys, however, are solid dual threat QBs. both are great passers and very good runners as well. that is one of lucks more underrated aspects. he's not a finesse runner by any means, just effective and tough.

i firmly believe that these two guys and newton are going to be the three best QBs in the league in just a few years. i hope that luck and RG3 get drafted by AFC teams, though. i want to see cam play them both in the superbowl.

Luck will be number one. He is far ahead of anyone else in the 2012 draft and deserves the pick.

RG has been helped as mentioned earlier by Cam Newtons success. The one thing that makes Cam head and shoulders a better pick than RG is that he stands head and shoulders above RG.

Being 6' 5" and 250 is much better than being a Vick type frame. Throwing lanes are important, speed equal, but what hurts Vick the most is that Vick gets hurt the most. He seems to be out several games a year due to injury. RG is much closer to Vick than Newton and this will hurt him a touch.

I would not rule out him going to Shanahan who might want to run two qb offense at times and bring in a crowd equally excited after Newton success. Ultimately, however, I see RG going around our pick, which is probably going to be 9. A Miami win this Sunday would be perfect and have us picking right before Miami and KC, both potential suitors for RG and great spot for trade down partner for the Panthers.

This trade down to me is a much more viable than the Richardson from the other thread. Don't see Richardson going till the middle of the round.

Keep in mind RG III was facing the nation's 104th ranked pass D last night.

To me his UT game was the most impressive.

yeah, i don't base much off that game. same with newton's NCG. neither one of their bowl games particularly showed why they are special.

i think that newton for sure made rg3 and other true dual threat QBs more palatable and trustworthy or at the very least less scary and risky.

of course both guys can be seen as more attractive because of their overall attitudes, work ethic, and other intangibles that have really helped them out as well.

i see people talking about shanny as someone who wants rg3, but i don't really trust that situation. i don't know that shannahan is creative enough to let someone like RG3 blossom as a QB.

Agreed

I mentioned the possibility of the Skins but thought it unlikely. More likely for him to go around 10 spot.

Would love for someone like Seattle to move up to 9, us drop to 14, and pick up a third rounder. At 14, we could choose, Martin, DeCastro, Kirpatrick, etc and we could be a better "team" which is where we need to go.

Was Alex Smith really marginal, or was he a "victim" of terrible circumstances?

Is Luck a "sure thing"? There have been a few reports now of guys saying Luck can't make the big-time NFL throws, even Mike Greenberg asked what he's missing when he watches Luck, because to him, he sees nothing special. (Of course, the answer that followed was that, Luck plays in a three tight-end system, when he gets to the NFL he'll shine.)

If you're basing your thoughts on luck on talent evaluations by Greeny then you may need to have your head examined.

I think he was really marginal. The only circumstance that changed was his coach. It's not like they got him new weapons or protection this year.
if you believe that you aren't looking at the big picture there.

that coach change happened every year. there was no time to get used to an offensive scheme or system because it kept changing every year. there was no continuity. there was no effort by any of them to develop him as a QB.

this is the first coaching staff to really put anything into him.
