Vince Young has a career record of 31-19. So how do you gauge success?

He was released by the team that drafted him to be their franchise QB. He was picked up by Philly as a backup QB and hasn't exactly lit the world on fire in that role. He hasn't lived up to expectations considering where he was drafted. If he had the ability to be a starting QB in this league, he hasn't shown it up to now.

Disclaimer: I actually think he could do the job if a team committed to him. The Tennessee situation was just terrible and I feel sorry for what happened to him there.

Earning? So if the starter gets hurt and he comes in did he earn it? If Not Jake Delhomme and Steve Young and plenty other never earned that job. Keeping a Job at QB in this league? Good luck to any human that tries. black or White or chinese or Mexican....blah blah.

If I remember correctly Gabbert supposedly got involved because he was defending his little brother. Not saying fighting shouldn't raise questions, but come on man he was just defending family :cool:

Cam's issues were explainable as well. He bought a laptop that turned out to be stolen, there is nothing but an unnamed source saying he cheated on a paper, and he didn't violate any NCAA rules.

But people are saying those things raised questions. Why did being at a bar and getting into a fight not raise questions about Gabbert??

the "fake smile" BS aside, what about the ridiculous statements about his leadership and work ethic? nobody that would have actually talked to his coaches and teammates at Blinn and Auburn would ever question his work ethic or what kind of leader/teammate he was.

the same goes for the idiots that tried to claim that he never made more than one read on passing attempts at Auburn. if these people were actually watching game film, talking to teammates and coaches, and coming away with these opinions, it's hard not to think that Cam has/had far more than his share of haters in the media.

Actually, not everyone in the media would have been able to "do the legwork" that Hurney and Rivera did, specifically with meeting and interviewing Cam multiple times.

Not every team would have spent the time we did looking at Cam because they didn't have the same need, but they may have looked at him a bit or what not, who knows.

I don't think there is really much defense for, say, the "fake smile" comment, but I also think that some folks here and elsewhere are trying very hard to create some kind of "media atmosphere" that hates or hated Cam Newton when there were plenty of reasons to look deeper into his past because of what was known, without some racial motivation.

Yeah, right, a bar fight where nothing happened in it, the only accounts seem to indicate that somebody else attacked his brother, he tried to talk them down before anything happened, surely is the same as being arrested, having a huge problem at a school, having to leave in disgrace from it to rehab his image etc. It's much easier to "explain away" something that wasn't charged and barely made a report because of his minor it was than what happened with Cam. Sure you can "explain' a lot of this stuff, such as the explanations for Mallett's issues too, but ultimately depending on what it is you need much more explaining.

How are these things remotely similar? Stop reaching, Tee. Cam had a tough early start to his college career and turned it around.

You don't get it....nice characterization of his problems, BTW. Young does indeed have a 31-19 record. He isn't a starting QB as of right now. He was drafted 3rd overall in 2006, that was 90 games ago...he's credited with starting in 50 of them. Success, in my opinion would be Young having a starting job at this point in his career. For a 3rd selection in the 1st round, anything less is a disappointment.

The problem wasn't jarmacus and vince. The problem was the people said jamarcus didn't work out and he is black. Somehow that became an indictment on all black qb's. Can someone please explain to me how Luck is the best prospect in a generation while cam, who was the most dominant college football player I have ever seen in my life was a bad prospect because he has a "fake smile". People have biases and they don't recognize them. Its a reality of life. If you dont believe me look up "What would you do, bikes in a park" on youtube.

Weren't Cam's charges dropped because he participated in a pre-trial intervention?

Obviously once he got to Auburn he turned things around, but that's why you actually look into things, to make sure he did.

FYI, I had thought the place the "bar fight" happened was actually a pizza place, and again, he was defending his brother. When the worst thing a guy does in school is: 1) have a beer underage, and 2) defend his brother in a fight, I don't think you're worried about him.

Not like you might be when a guy gets brought up on charges... even if they are dropped. So you look into what happened with both guys perhaps, but they aren't even close to the same.

Cam made mistakes. Everyone does, but some make worse mistakes than others. Some of those mistakes bear a bit more investigation than others. Why is this an issue?

Gumby's Pizza is a place that serves drinks until late at night. I don't know what classifies as a bar but a place that advertises beer pitcher specials and stays open late seems like a bar to me. The fight was over a guy taking to long in the bathroom and then the two groups "took it outside".

Cam bought a laptop for $120 from some dude and says he knew it may have been stolen. He admits that mistake.

And the main point is that the Cam issues were over blown and exaggerated and most people knew it. Personally I don't think Gabbert did anything wrong. But it was never discussed or barely even mentioned. Trouble raises questions for some guys and others it just disappears and gets written off as "he was just drinking underage at 1:30 in the morning and getting into fights. No big deal" Yet buying a stolen laptop becomes "he has major character red flags"
