Deadspin: Cam Newton > Tim Tebow

From Deadspin.com:

On the McLaughlin Group on Sunday, the panelists were giving out year-end political awards, and Rich Lowry, the guy from the National Review last seen wiping starbursts off his khakis, gave one to The Golden Calf of Bristol, for being the most exciting thing in American sports right now, or some such thing. It wasn't the first time in the last few weeks that the right wing had referenced The Golden Calf of Bristol (see Rick Perry), but it was the most effortlessly irritating instance. The Golden Calf of Bristol isn't the NFL's most exciting player. He's not even the league's most exciting first-year starter. There's another run-happy national-championship-winning quarterback who arrived on the professional scene this year, a guy whom Football Outsiders today called "a young Peyton Manning and a rookie Herschel Walker all rolled into one." It's not The Golden Calf of Bristol—it's Cam Newton, and he, not The Golden Calf of Bristol, deserves to have pundits yammering about him on Sunday morning television.

I don't get why this is even a debate. If you want to compare Cam to another talented rookie QB with potential, I'll entertain that. Cam vs. Dalton...okay, sure. But Cam vs. The Golden Calf of Bristol??? Is this just because they played at Florida together for a year?

It's because mainstream media outlets have occupied tons of airtime with The Golden Calf of Bristol time and have all but completely ignored Cam's record setting rookie year. Every other year, if a rookie QB was THIS good, it'd be impossible to steer clear of the headlines. See Bradford, Ryan, Sanchez, Flacco, Rapestburger etc. And statistically speaking (wins and playoffs aside) those rookie years don't hold a candle to Cam's. Even Vince Young got so overblown he made the madden cover after his rookie year (a fate I wish never gets bestowed upon Cam!), but still a shining example of how that POS The Golden Calf of Bristol has taken Cam's well deserved recognition. Not that recognition from mainstream media means a damn, but I'm this day and age, it's hard to argue that it doesn't mean something to the players and coaches, especially one in Cam who does want to be known as the greatest young QB to come into the NFL.

People can prefer whomever they wish personally but when it comes to what happens on the field there is simply no comparison.

Comparing the two is actually comical. These ridiculous questions only come up because of FF. Why else would the two be compared and there be a need to evaluate them against each other? It's not like there would ever, could ever be a trade.

If you find yourself vehemently defending Cam against The Golden Calf of Bristol stop, excuse yourself from the conversation, and curse yourself under your breath for acting like a fool while you stagger off in a blanket of self-loathing. The Golden Calf of Bristol works for his fans and Cam works for ours. Outside of that is irrelevant.

Anyone that loves The Golden Calf of Bristol over Cam

a) is a denver fan

b) knows nothing of football

c) is a christian evangelical and either a or b

i vote a. and c. because i dont think anyone with a brain would say with a clear head that The Golden Calf of Bristol is a better quarterback than Cam Newton because it's so funny. The Golden Calf of Bristol is a great man and someone who can improve, but Newton is 100 steps ahead of The Golden Calf of Bristol as a passer, The Golden Calf of Bristol is working on alot of things, Newton's working on decision making which is fixable.

i do think that's part of why they are debated (for some strange reason) and you can throw in mobility, but if you want to compare Cam to a mobile Qb, try Jake Locker instead of The Golden Calf of Bristol, but as of now, Newton is better, but i do like Locker and his potential.

That's just it, the label of Quarterback is very subjective. If you say passer, runner, blocker, decision maker, etc then you can look at stats and make an argument. But when you talk about quarterback you bring in leadership skills, candor with the press and public, off the field stuff, and the 'opinions' each and every individual has about a guy in these areas. It's impossible to argue. There is the football player and there is the man. the combination is the "quarterback", and each QB is judged by what he does on the field and in the locker room as well as off the field in regards to his individual team, community, and franchise fan base.

    • Bigcat at Barstool was talking about Purdy and said he’s a guy you win with. Not a guy you win becasue of. Like Allen, Jackson, Mahomes, and Burrow. I’m all for Bryce being our QB the next 2 years, but you can’t go out there a pay him like a top 12 QB when we become a .500 ball club.

    • Just another two seasons of retooling our 3-4 defensive roster for 4-3; all because we never drafted an NT for the 3-4.
