Sherrod and Charles

He hasn't been as good as his contract would dictate either.

Do you even know what Godfrey's contract numbers are? Please look those up and compare to Reed and Polamalu. Godfrey is fine. Sherrod Martin and whomever is the other CB have been the problem all year long.

note*

Pay close attention to the years.

There is no doubt Martin has had a tough year. And like many, I have been underwhelmed by Godfrey this year. He's played okay, but nothing special. On the other hand, the Panther's players voted him as a captain, and they certainly know more about him and his play than anyone on the Huddle. Next year, with some more pieces in place, perhaps Godfrey can begin to really shine.

Yes, I know what the contract is. It's heavy in bonus money. The problem is that he'll continue to collect those bonuses as long as he's the best safety on the roster.

Unfortunately for us, being the best safety on the Panthers' roster is akin to being the tallest midget in the room.

I see the raw talent at the safety position. Godfrey, Martin, and Pugh all have the talent to succeed. I'm of the opinion that we need to go out and find a new, aggressive secondary coach. Not an old retread. Our DBs other than Gamble have plain sucked this year.

I'm not that interested in tackle stats for a DB. I'd rather them be breaking up plays than making tackles.

You really need to re-watch our games and pay real attention to Godfrey's play. People looking at him through Troy Polamalu/Ed Reed glasses will be disappointed. Looking at him in comparison to the other 29 FS in the league will see something different. I swear Godfrey always catches heat on this board and he had done nothing but improve every year he has been here.

You should care because for most teams the SS is like a 4th linebacker against teams that run the ball well. If you care about tackles for LBs, then you should care about tackles for the SS as well. What makes Polamalu one of the best SS's in the game is his ability to tackle. Not saying he is bad in coverage, but its not like hes a lights out coverage guy. He only gets about 10 PD"s per season, combined with around 80 tackles.

PS: Everyone bringing up Ed Reed, he is a FS, a much more coverage oriented position than SS. Comparing him to Godfrey is like comparing a running back to a fullback, the both have back in the name, but they dont really have that much in common.

A better lb core will help the safeties. We have been abused on a lot of intermediate plays over top the linebackers. Hopefully Beason coming back will clean some of that up so the safeties have less to worry about. Martin and Godfrey arent game changers but if they are playing behind a stack lb core they will be servicable enough. I say go best available olb with our first pick.

Wake up dude. This isn't your father's NFL. There isn't much difference between a FS and a SS in today's NFL and safeties for the most part play a role closer to a CB than a LB. Gone are the days of a slobber knocking safeties who couldn't cover, but could hit like a truck. For one, those guys would draw a dozen flags per game these days. And second, the ball is getting slung all over the field these days. The old three yards and a cloud of dust, outside of John Fox, are gone. QBs are putting up ludicrous numbers in today's NFL. You gotta have safeties who can cover. In days of old, the SS was pretty much an undersized LB and the FS was pretty much a CB who was a step slow. That's why safeties by and large weren't highly valued. That view is slowly but surely changing.

I thought we'd have one in Godfrey who is a converted college CB.

I don't dislike Godfrey. He didn't hold a gun to Hurney's head and force that contract. It was given to him. It's just like I said, I think you can find guys like Godfrey available pretty much every year.
