Vick: Panthers’ Newton will revolutionize the game

Michael Vick knows a thing or two about what it’s like to be a No. 1 overall pick expected to change the way the QB position is played. So it’s no wonder he has a strong opinion on what Panthers rookie QB Cam Newton is doing this year in Carolina.

Vick sat down with Panthers WR Steve Smith for Friday’s edition of NFL Network’s “NFL Total Access,” and the open-ended conversation quickly turned to the record-setting numbers Newton is putting up for the Panthers.

“I think the sky is the limit for this kid,” said Vick. “I think he’s going to change the game. I think he’s going to revolutionize the game in such a way that I did — only being bigger, stronger and more physical. The way he’s played has been phenomenal.”

Newton definitely has the size advantage on Vick — Newton’s 6-foot-5, 248-pound frame dwarfs the 6-foot, 215-pound Vick — but even the Eagles QB didn’t expect Newton to enjoy this much success this soon.

“I talked to him right before the opening week of the season, and I just told him to go out there and have fun,” Vick said. “He’s far exceeded what I thought he was going to be, and what the world thought he was going to be. And it’s a credit to Cam.”

Smith, who has enjoyed his own career re-birth this season with 72 catches for 1,299 yards and six touchdowns, maintained the same stance he’s taken the whole season in regard to Newton: His big-time play is no surprise for those who get to see him work on a daily basis.

“I’m not shocked,” Smith said. “During the lockout I had an opportunity down here in Carolina to work out with him privately a few times. I was able to see what he can do — amazed to see the things he could do and also see how much room he had to grow. … I saw his willingness to work hard (and) I’m not really surprised or shocked.”

Watch Vick and Smith on “NFL Total Access” Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
