Repeat 2007 Draft Strategy?

We obviously don't know exactly where we'll land in the upcoming draft, but our current position is ahead of some QB hungry teams, increasing the prospects of finding a trade partner looking to leapfrog another needy team if we want to trade down. 1) Can we find a partner willing to move up and 2) can we hit some home runs like we did in 2007? Apart from a certain WR from USC that we picked in the 2nd, we hit gold through the third round that year.

When we traded the 14th pick in the 1st round to the Jets:

We gave up - 1st round pick (14 - Darrelle Revis) and 6th round pick (191 - non-factor)

We got - 1st round pick (25 - Jon Beason), 2nd round pick (59 - Ryan Kalil), and 5th round pick (164 - non-factor).

We also got Charles Johnson in the 3rd.

We got the heart and soul of our defense in pro-bowl MLB Beason late in the first and effectively got Kalil for "free" (from a cost-of-trade standpoint).

Such magic do-able in 2012 or should we stay pat in the top 10 picks?

If you can't get Kalil, which seems unlikely at this point, or Blackmon, then trade down. I know many say receiver is a luxury, but the top teams in the NFL, (Saints, Pats, Steelers, and Packers) all go 5 deep with excellent wide outs. Baring that if we have to stand pat I'd consider strongly best o-lineman, or best corner. If a trade down happens then possibly outside LB, or safety is where we should look. I've not been impressed with Godfrey, or Martin, and think that improvement at these two positions will fix many of the deficiencies that are usually deemed problems with corner play.

Why the f**k would you want to waste the Panthers first pick on Blackmon?

Because you can never have too many quality wideouts. LaFell seems to be a keeper, but Gettis is still an unknown. Smith is not getting younger, keep in mind. Not even going to mention Edwards who can't seem to sniff the field, obviously he has shown nothing in practice that would lead the coaching staff to give him any playing time.

Im not necessarily advocating that wide out is a priority, but if hes there, and we pick around 7th, I'm sure he'd be BPA.

I'm ok with Godfrey. it's Martin I'm not too impressed with. But lets be honest. If we had better d-line play and our linebacker core was where we expected it to be then our safeties would be fine.

True, but assuming we pick around 7th, is the a player (dline or line backer) worthy of that pick? I'm saying if we can't trade down then Blackmon would be a reasonable pick, as would One of the top o tackles. I really think Kalil and ClaIbourne go top 5, for that matter Blackmon as well.

So assuming no trade down, where do you go with the pick?

CB first round or bust for me, we wont have a shot at blackmon/kalil, and our pick is too high to look at zach brown, unless he blows up the combine. Claiborne or kirkpatrick would fill the biggest need, by far imo, on this team. That being said if we can trade from top 10 to around 20, pick up a second round, and still get zach brown with the first, then im all for it

I say you have to look at OT and a CB like Kirkpatrick. Martin will be on board and Rieff also. So there is some depth at OT this year.:)

    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
