What is a tag?

I asked that last week. But my question was more about the relevance of them. Maybe an answer will help others into understanding why they should fit the thread.

I put a thread in nerdvana yesterday about it. I started adding relevant tags to some threads thinking it might help in google searches. By the time I went to bed, most of my answers said it wouldn't so I quit.

Look above the quick reply box on the bottom, you will see a tag.

It helps search engines and other syndication tools find relevant things. Can be very useful for increasing traffic if used correctly.

OK - so it does help then - I added Jerry Richardson and Heart Transplant to his threads and a couple of other things like that to some other ones. So that helps then? I wasn't sure whether adding Jerry Richardson would help because his name was in the thread so much and wondered whether something else might be better.
