Our defense has fallen off significantly since the departure of Peppers. Is there a direct correlation? Hard to prove there isn't.

I'd say there are a lot more factors at work than just Peppers leaving Carolina that have made our defense worse. Certainly the fact that our offense was one of the worst in league history last year made their job that much tougher, and losing not only our Pro Bowl MLB and newly signed DT in Week One, plus a slew of other LB injuries in 2011. You could also argue that the downgrade from Richard Marshall to Captain Munnerlyn at the #2 CB was significant.

We use our DEs primarily on the line. But, that is why I included Pep's INTs because it shows he's slightly more versatile. Pep has 13 PDs to 4 for CJ and that's the only significant difference between the two. CJ has been in coverage a good deal this year and almost had two picks IIRC.

Bottom line is, they're not that different.

yeah, other than the fact that athletically Peppers is on another planet.....they aren't that different. Peppers can flat out do things Johnson can't.....Johnson's trade off is he is going to be more consistant in a couple aspects of the DE position.

Was a good move letting Julius Peppers walk and not overpaying him. Johnson has yielded better production for a cheaper cost; it's really a no brainer. Is Johnson as "complete" as Peppers? No. But keeping him was much more beneficial to the Panthers as a whole than keeping Julius Peppers around.

Cam would have already have beaten the pants off of him anyways for flashing a big grin and a delighted smile after we got blown out by the Titans.

Julius would have been terrible for the chemistry of this team and the attitude we are trying to build. We've seen on more than one occasion that Julius is quite content with losing as long as he got his. His heart was never in this game, and it certainly wasn't in this team.

Letting him go was one of the best decisions of the past few years.
