Draft a special teams late???

For a franchise that prides it's self on building through the draft this franchise neglects special teams. Not just kicker but punter and punter returner. We've needed a kicker for a while seeing as the front office knew kasay wouldnt last forever. Instead of wasting our late rounders on camp bodies like lawrence wilson how about drafting special teams starters? Baker isn't winning punter of the year anytime soon so why wait on him either?

Horrible special teams play has haunted this team for years but it goes unnoticed. Enter Illinois kicker Derek Dimke. Its time to stop digging through the trash and find our own stud kicker. This not being able to connect from 44 yards out is embarassing. And as much as i love AE, he isnt a kick returner i've seen enuff. Not enuff wiggle and doesnt seem to have that next gear. I'd take a long look at florida's jeff demps 5-7. What say you??

I'd rather use a late round pick on someone like Jacory Harris or Jordan Jefferson.

We nee our Josh Johnson, the backup QB who if Cam ever has to come out, can step in and we don't need to change the offense because they have similar skill sets. I think the Colts and Bears are proof that you need to protect yourself, especially with Cam who puts himself at risk more than a traditional QB.

you generally don't draft guys specifically for special teams unless you're massively deep at every position or the guy is at a skill position (kicker, punter, or kick returner.) you draft guys that can play in backup positions on offense or defense but have also worked on special teams units in college. those guys become your starters on special teams.

I'm really tired of drafting kick/punt returners. We just have the worst luck.

Drafting a punter or kicker would be nice, but not both. We can find one in FA.

Pilares seems to be a good pick.

Not saying I'm jumping on the "omg we have the next Hester" bandwagon, not even close to that. Just saying he seems to have pretty damn good vision of the field and doesn't just rely on speed like Goodson.

I think this thread was more about drafting guys who can block/cover well. That is, by far, the biggest problem on our ST's unit(besides the K/P of course lolz).

BY THE WAY. It's worth noting that Bears ST coach Dave Toub's contract is up after this season. I read that the Bears didn't offer him enough money. Considering he coached there with Rivera, I could easily see us making a push.

Oh lawdy that would be fuging AMAZING. The coverage, blocking, etc of the Bears ST is the reason why Hester is so successful. Yeah he's got special talent, but if you watch the replays of all his return TD's, the blocking is flawless.

    • There's some big assumptions in here - first, I think Canales HAS helped Bryce a poo ton. To pretend he hasn't is asinine. Has he fixed him?  I mean, the dude looks like he could perhaps be a backup or low-end starter now, whereas he looked like he didn't belong in the NFL a year ago. You're talking about a coach that brought one of the worst NFL QBs of all time to a point where he may actually be a low-end starter. That IS impressive. Second, the bolded. Come on - given the offense, the dude is far from "trending towards bust." He definitely needs work but he's shown an impressive ability to get open. He's contributing to an anemic offense. The dude is our leading receiver (though he'll be #2 in yardage by end of season by a little, as Thielen does better per game).  As to his coaching, he had this team competing and believing against 3 of the better teams in the NFL, despite the lack of talent, and despite our QB situation.  Yes, things fell apart vs DAL, and he was outcoached. But that will happen with young coaches IMO.  I don't think it indicates he cant' be better. The idea of "pulling off the bandage" is ridiculous. Who would want to coach here if we fired this guy after one season?
    • Whatever they are in totality the cowboys are beat up all to hell on both sides of the ball and even that was too much for lil Bryce to overcome.  Bryce defenders have to hype up every other team and trash every other part of the panthers just because of the situation they’ve put themselves in.
    • JB had a first round grade in the eyes of a lot scouts based on HIS TALENT LEVEL. If not for the injury he would have gone higher in the draft, possibly between the middle and the end of round 1. To get him just before the 50th pick is a steal. He'd be on a 4 year deal. You can't even renegotiate until the end of the season 3. You're basically paying him nothing for 3 seasons. I don't buy into all back are interchangeable. No they're not. You have average backs, good backs, then your great-exceptional backs. The latter category doesn't grow on trees. If a back is special it pays to keep them. The key is knowing the difference between the first two categories and the third one.
