Emotionally yes I say cut ut Mare, but I know it's not that simple and there are surely other considerations. I don't think letting Mare play out the season does us any good... I do think there is the possibility that this kid could get some game experience and we can see what he can do. There will be a lot of pressure on him to perform so it would be a good test.

So maybe keep Mare, deactivate him and let this kid kick and make a decision in the off season.

Yea, it's the same guy, but that doesn't necessarily mean much.

Mare could probably do it too...in practice.

That said, I don't see where we have anything to lose by going in another direction. Cutting Mare would accelerate probably $3 million in cap hit, and we may not be able to do anything until after the season, but it needs to be done. We are paying too much for a kicker that is average at best. Admit the mistake and move on.

If the Panthers didn't give Mare that contract at the beginning of the year, I probably would have signed Kunalic over Mare, or at least that would have been an honest battle in training camp. Most of us already knew Mare had problems kicking the ball in the past, so it is no surprise to see him struggling, but it is a surprise to see how much he's been struggling. I really hate they gave him that contract. (3 million a year for a kicker? Is Mare going to the HOF or something? Did Rivera think he was signing Vinatieri?)

Kunalic looked good kicking at the Panthers fan day. Don't know how many people were watching the kickers while the first and second team offenses were working on the opposite side of the field, but I was. :D Funny thing is I jokingly yelled out "LET KUNALIC KICK!" Little did I know I would get my wish by season's end.

The signing bonus was $4 million, one of which is credited to 2011 already. So it should be $3 million if he is cut prior to June 1st.

Depending on where we are on the cap right now, that may be why he hasn't already been cut. We may not be able to and stay under this year's cap.
