I'm now with the fire Hurney train

Record.

We were the worst team in the NFL last season, and are near the bottom again this season.

You can't really blame him for the team not improving a whole lot because of the cut cost at all cost mentality of the two years before the lockout. It was going to take a few drafts to get this team turned around from having all it's players let go over those two years.

Also got to count in a disgruntled coach for last season who no longer wanted to be here. This season had a shortened off season with new schemes being put in place and being led by a rookie QB. Combine that with the injuries to the defense, especially up the middle with Edwards and Beason going down.

I'm not saying Hurney hasn't made mistakes, but he's done a whole lot more good for the Panthers franchise then bad and is still considered one of the best GM's in the league at drafting and rebuilding a team.

First off, I would love to know who in the "league" thinks that Hurney is good at drafting, or rebuilding a team?

Secondly, all I hear is excuses of why he has a team that picked first last season, and will probably pick in the top 6 this year.

Thirdly, the team would not have been "gutted" if it was a good team in the first place.

This team has 6 W's in the last 29 games, and what's the old saying...you are what you are.

....Hurney...is still considered one of the best GM's in the league at drafting and rebuilding a team.

I'm sorry, but anybody that falls for the old bait-and-switch as hard as Marty did when he panicked and traded away what turned out to be this years #33 overall pick to draft a I-AA QB-to-WR project does not get a free pass or an excuse from me. He has picked some good players, but some of his draft day trades can be considered idiotic at best.

They are still laughing at Hurney up in Foxboro over that Armanti trade.

He's a member of the NFL General Managers Advisory Committee, has been ranked in the top 10 GM's of all profesional sports 4 times over the past 8 seasons. Is widely considered to be the third best drafting GM behind Polian and Newsome.

The team was good but injury prone, it did reach the playoff's 3 times, the NFC title game 2 times and a SB in a 5 year span. Can you name how many teams have been to 2 NFC games and a SB over Hurney's tenure?

Panther's, Steelers, Patriots, Packers, Cardinals and Eagles. I believe that's it.

He's basically a rookie right now and learning the WR spot in the NFL takes time for even a WR, it was a project selection and everyone knew it. That doesn't hurt his draft stock though because of his speed and athleticism.

I'm telling you that there were three teams that were expected to go Hard for Armanti at the top of the 4th round. (Not counting the Panthers) If you read his draft profiles, his high was as a 3rd round pick with an expected draft position in the late 4th round.

Here's the skill portion of his profile - He is a superior athlete with explosive speed (4.43) and very good running instincts and vision. Very elusive and agile, Edwards routinely makes the first man miss. He is great in the open field, has good (but untested) hands and is a tough competitor with a desire to improve.

The thing that gets lost in these debates that go in circles, is to what extent Marty's role in drafting players is vs. Fox, even vs. Richardson. I can't imagine that it's all been all Hurney, all Fox, or all Richardson.

I would not be surprised at all to learn that the Edwards trade was a Richardson move, from a marketing standpoint. He knew that at the very least that if the team bombed that there would be a pretty big legion of App. State homers that would be excited (seriously to App fans, Armanti is like the The Golden Calf of Bristol of FCS).

Hurney has typically had final say over personal decisions, but does take input from the coaches and from JR. For instance under Fox, he went for the type of players that Fox could and would use...

As for the all the other pro Hurney posters. John Fox was essentially fired/put in limbo because he wasn't winning consistently. Yet he's rocking in Denver, which has minimal offensive talent.

Fox Ball, turns out, is just the medicine in Denver.

So...was coaching the problem in the last few seasons?

Hmmm...

THERE'S ONLY ONE WAY TO MEASURE SUCCESS IN THIS LEAGUE...THE RECORD.

Hurney always argues, 'well the players I drafted are on the field.' He's right. But collectively, how many games have these dolts won this season and in the past two seasons? How many winning seasons in the last eight?

I say it all the time: if I did my job like Marty Hurney does his...all my clients would fire me. And with good reason.

He's on a committee...big deal.

What's the team's record over the last eight years?

Who has ranked him in the top 10 GMs? Are they on crack?

Who are the people who 'widely' consider him to be third behind Polian and Newsome?

I know this thread is about Hurney, but I have to comment on a few post regarding Rivera. I disagree that Rivera gets 3-more years. I don't think JR will be that patient. If the Panthers have another 4-5 win season next year, I think he will be fired.

Dom Capers went 7-9 with his first year with an expansion team, followed by 12-4, & 7-9. He got fired after going 4-12.

Seefart went 8-8 his first year (after the Panthers were 4-12 the year prior). Then preceeded to go 7-9, and then got fired after 1-15.

John Fox went 7-9 his first year (after the Panthers were 1-15).

Rivera first year? Still open but the odds are he ends up 5-11 which is the worst record of any Panthers coach in year one. I can't see how JR would be happy with these results.
