I'm now with the fire Hurney train

MORE SECOND GUESSING: Since second guessing seems to be the most popular sport in Charlotte this week, let’s do some more. The other popular bit of revisionist history that’s getting lots of play is the fact the Panthers kept linebacker Dan Morgan and let Will Witherspoon go. You can make a very strong argument that was a mistake. But just so you understand how it happened: The Panthers were talking contract extension with both linebackers during training camp last year. Offers were on the table to both and Morgan happened to be the first to accept, and that pretty much ended any chance of Witherspoon re-signing. The Panthers were going to pay big money to only one linebacker, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they paid the right one.

Bottom line is that as fans: how the hell do you really know if the GM is doing well if the fan base is already conflicted at the get-go on what a GM's roles are in our organization.

Rivera will be here at least 3 years and Hurney won't be fired next year given our organization's history with management/coaching. Bottom line is that we give things time (3 years to Seifert haha) and don't want to appear frantic making changes every other season. They want to emulate steady and consistent organizations (the Steelers of course) and create an appealing atmosphere to work in.

Hurney won't be gone unless Rivera doesn't work out...which is at least 3 years down the road. Anything else just seems uncharacteristic of JR & Co.

That's not accurate. The contract was there for both. Spoon wanted more. Who wrote that blurb?

Not sure who wrote it back in '06.

Anyhow, we're in violent agreement... most of the things people hold against Hurney are based on the benefit of hindsight and/or are viewed out of context.

The reason this team is hurting is obviously combination of a deviation in Hurney's normal talent-building philosophy and bad luck, as well as Richardson basically shutting down just about all team-related financial personnel operations leading up to the lockout. There's a part of which Hurney is responsible for some of the mess but not all of it. Trading up in '08 started a bad cycle of trading first round picks that lasted for 2 years without first rounders, which also happens to be Hurney's best round for finding talent. Combine that with the fact that this team is somehow fuging snakebit when it comes to injuries, and for some reason by week 2 every season we have like 4 starters on IR and another 4 day-to-day with turf-toe or a knee contusion or whatever. One of those guys always happens to be the guy that we traded up for: Otah.

Also Hurney's personnel decisions as well as Fox's mentality weren't meshing together by '10. Yea the Armanti trade might not pan out but it didn't help that Fox probably thought of Edwards as some kind of retarded baby with an arm growing out of its head which was possibly contagious and didn't want anything to do with him. Fox should've been fired earlier because he had no future here, and yea it's Richardson's money to pay him but this is one of those situations where your choices are do you want to try to win, or at least start building for a future of winning or do you want to save money.

Hurney would've been fired already if Richardson thought the moves he was making were awful. And it's very arguable that some of them were from 2009-2010. Hurney seems to be out of that mode as of now. I don't foresee him mortgaging the future anytime soon for players who don't project well to any position in a 4-3. Also he's got a very talented QB to build around. One that he spent a lot of time evaluating to be his no.1 selection and having his team nurture. The guy he hired, Ron Rivera is getting this team in the right direction. We're hurting for talent right now but we're feeling the effects of the lack of talent brought in that this team has been missing from years prior. If somebody is underachieving Ron will replace them, other guys who make plays will get more opportunities. Some people just aren't fit for the system we're running and will be dropped in a quick enough fashion. This is how teams get built.

Of course there's this contingent of instant gratification fine young males on here that love to measure every person on this team's performance basically by their W/L record, which is a very ambiguous, greenhorn-like perspective to have, and it's so bad that if Belichick 2000 and Sparano 2008 were coaching the same year they'd all argue Sparano is worlds better. Cam is gaining valuable experience in these painful losses and he'll use it as a foundation of knowledge for using this offseason to probably train hard and study film, but he's been scrutinized by the same people simply because the team isn't winning, and compared with every young QB that happens to be on fire. First Dalton, then The Golden Calf of Bristol, and probably after this week it'll be Yates now that we're matching up against him and The Golden Calf of Bristol's facing the Pats.

Instead of nitpicking a handful of moves I prefer to judge the end result of the team that's assembled each year. The totality of draft picks, free agent moves, cap management, negotiations, everything, all adds up to the final product, the overall quality and talent level of the 53 man roster. From this perspective I think it's obvious we aren't one of better run teams.

This seems reasonable to me, especially with Hurney's body of work that extends a decade. By now he has been given every opportunity to demonstrate his abilities as a GM.

That said, I suspect The Big Cat has given Hurney until the end of Ron's current contract to turn the team's fortunes around. If Hurney doesn't, I think there is a good chance he and Ron will both be looking for new employment opportunities.

Gross, Otah(invaluable when healthy) , Kalil, beason, davis, conner, gamble, hardy, cj, captain( 6th rounder?). The list goes on. These are all hurney guys. Most are first rounders. And most are pro bowl worthy( at least for honorable mention)

And where have these players gotten this team lately?
