Deangelo's Contract will be the Worst Thing to Happen to this Offense

With Deangelo getting a fat contract, we won't be able to keep Jonathan Stewart for long. Stewart is the more complete running back. He runs better on the outside, on the inside, he catches the ball better, he blocks in the pocket better, he blocks better downfield, he breaks tackles better, hell, the guy even play actions and calls timeouts better. Contrary to dumbsh*t belief on this board, no, they cannot keep splitting carries forever. They can split carries and not give a damn for a few seasons, but they sure as hell ain't gonna split a fat contract. Williams already got the fat contract, so what's a Stew to do? Stewart knows he deserves more, knows he has starter talent, and he knows his potential isn't being used in this offense since we gotta keep giving the chosen boy carries hoping that Williams' couple more rushing yards than Stew would blind us from seeing that we picked the wrong guy.

With Stewart gone, our screen plays will pretty much cease to exist since Deangelo is cross-eyed or some sh*t and can't handle catching a ball while walking forward. Deangelo isn't elite, he isn't fast, he isn't quick, he isn't strong, he was a product of our beastly offensive line in previous seasons. Yes, Stewart benefited from that line too, but whereas Stew focused on becoming a complete back and overall beast, Deangelo stayed the same praying that line would come back some day. When Williams was re-signed, the logic was "well we're just trying to keep the core team together after the lockout", but what they didn't realize was that they were making the final choice between these two backs. As much as I love the Deangelo, we signed the wrong dude. Stewart is an absolute freak who hasn't reached his true potential, while Williams tomorrow is Williams today. We're going to pay for this in a couple seasons, and nobody seems to realize.

DeAngleo Williams won't finish out that contract in Carolina.

again, when Stewart's contract comes up......they won't opt to continue paying a 29 yr old RB IF it means they part with a YOUNGER RB who is BETTER player in this offense.

That is the thing about the NFL and contracts......they doesnt mean the player actually plays them out. If they part w/ half of Double Trouble...Williams is still most likely first out the door.

And it depends on how Williams salary is structured. Maybe we set it up to give more cap room when Stewart's contract is up.

Williams contract is pretty front loaded, He made a base pay of over 6.2 million this season. I expect that to go up substantially next season and probably be around 7.5-8 million. 5 million of next seasons salary is going to be guaranteed as well. He'll have seen over half of his money by the end of next season if you count his Signing bonus.

I hope we can keep Stewart. As much as I like Williams it looks like he isn't quite suited to play in this offense. Stewart on the other hand played this type at Oregon and it seems like whenever we run out of the shotgun Williams gets 2-3 yards while stewart always seems to get 4-6. Yeah Williams is the big play threat but like last game it seems like he gets one big play than nothing afterward. Stewart seems more consistant. Not to mention the huge differance in the passing game.

Two things:

1- DeAngelo Will re-structure

2- BOTH of our running backs have gotten the last 2 years off. In this instance they are younger than what their age indicates. I definitely think that this is by design. No need to stress these guys out in a "evaluating talent" year. The staff knows what they can do, they knew we werent going far this year... Save the RB's by giving them less carries.

I don't think Williams is having a bad year as much as he isn't getting the carries that he is used to get. Between splitting the carries with Stewart and our new pass game the days of two 1,000 yard or maybe even one 1,000 back are gone. If you think Williams is done then explain why his YPC is 5.2? that is pretty good and if you think he is bad because he only has 600 yards then you don't pay attention to whats going on. Stewart is a beast and is younger but he isn't considered an elite RB and we shouldn't have a problem keeping him. I think Hurney is smart enough to realize how important it is to have two running backs that can take the load off of one another. Stewart should have no problem being resigned and shouldn't cost as much money as Williams.

I know it looks bad that we don't have a 1,000 yard RB because of our history with Fox running the ball but those days are gone and our RBs are doing as good as any top RB considering the carries they are getting.

Do I wish that our running backs got more carries each game? Yes, I know it would really help Cam by taking pressure off of him and probably the reason why we always give up leads is because we don't use our biggest strength on offense enough but I also realize that we have a new offensive coordinator that is learning what his players can do and without an offseason and a rookie QB I don't expect him to have our offense running on all cylinders this season.

There is no such thing as getting yeas off because of splitting carries.

It's all about age. It's not about breaking down as much as it is being able to heal more quickly. Older bodies don't heal as quickly as young ones.

Do you think that LT would have been playing at his 06 level if Turner had been there to tote the rock more often? Nope. He is just old.

You know that actually makes a lot of sense. They had Cam throwing right out of the gate, and I know we are a vertical offense but we were clearly ignoring the regular running game. If the coaches really did want this to be an accelerated learning experience for Cam this year, while preserving their veterans for a potential playoff year, then it is a genius move. Next year will give us time to fix the offensive line and the defense so that we can really ride Williams and Stewart when we need to. Let's hope this was pre-planned.

Maybe not now, but I think there is good argument that because he carried his offense single handedly for so long, he wore down when you would have expected him to. If he had taken less hits or been able to keep his joints from doing so much early in his career, maybe he would have extended his high level of play for a few more seasons. 30 isn't old. The amount of pounding your body takes over that 30 years makes you old.
