After re-watching the game...

It is amazing how much different the game seems when you can watch it without the emotional highs and lows experienced on game day. If you have the ability to re-watch it, I highly recommend doing so.

A couple of observations:

  • The whole thing of "it was a huge mistake to shut it down at the end of the half" argument is negated by the fact that we had lousy field position thanks to a Jordan Pugh hold on the punt return. I can understand being conservative in that situation due to the field position.

  • Cam didn't go into a shell after either one of his interceptions. He looked the same to me other than the normal frustration that occurs when the team cannot execute. The first int was just a dumb rookie mistake. On the second, the ball just got away from him. It was a bad throw. It happens to every QB. But it did not appear to be due to him being dejected over the first int.

  • The Mare miss looks just as bad after watching it the 2nd time.

  • I agree about the play calling on 1st and 5 at the end of the game. It was a mistake by Chud, no doubt. I still think he lacks confidence in us picking up yards on the ground in tough situations.

  • We got beat by a more complete team. Simple and plain. Other than Mare, I didn't see anybody obviously choking or giving up.

Take the game day emotion out of it, and it was a great divisional game and a harbinger of better days ahead.

I agree with pretty much everything except for the end of the 1st half "shutdown." I believe Pugh's hold put us around the 17, which isn't too bad considering touchbacks put the ball only 3 yards further. I may be incorrect on this one, but that's not the point. Point is, when you have all the momentum like we did, you don't rest on your laurels - you go for the kill! Instead of running out the clock, why not see if you can get in position for at least a FG? (just make sure it's within 30 yards or else choker boy misses it). You could see that Cam was upset and I don't blame him the least bit.

When that drive ended, I could've sworn John Fox was still coaching our team.

As long as teams can do what they need to do to win the game, at will, we will continue to lose. Oposition gets behind and decides to tighten up. The Pantherds have not the ability to stop them. If the Falcons can put all those points, other teams will too.

And I guess that's my point.

In this stage of their development, the Panthers are just a tease. We don't have the pieces in place yet to compete with good teams for 60 minutes. We are like a car with a lot of horsepower but crappy suspension and steering. As long as everything is going in a straight line, we are fine, but the least little bump and we can't get it back on track.

Yup, always re-watch the games to get a more objective opinion. I agree that Cam didn't go into a shell at all, team just had trouble executing. Despite the loss I actually feel much better about the game having watched it a 2nd time.

Like the OP said, first pick was a very Farve-esque mistake trying to make something out of nothing, he said himself that he should have just eaten the sack. 2nd pick was an overthrow and I can tell you from being there that when the sun disappeared behind the stadium it got MUCH colder, wouldn't be surprised if cold hands/ball had something to do with some of the throws he made in the 2nd half of the game, don't think he's had to deal with that kind of cold on many occasions in his career thus far. I'm not making excuses for him, but I have to believe that was a factor.

Having said all of that, Cam still put us in a position to win and we were failed by our special teams and defense... a recurring theme this year.

Also with a sizable lead you don't want to turn it over in your own territory and give free points to the opposing team. That would really kill our momentum going into the half.

There was nothing wrong with what we did going into the half, it was the smart thing to do. And if anyone thinks that killed our momentum for the second half is just reaching.

At first blush (because I only watched the game once), defensive tackle play was much improved in this game compared to previous games.

Did you see that in your review?

Yes, and our secondary felt the brunt of that as it completely exposed them.

No disrespect Marguide... But I don't really need to re-watch the game to come up with those conclusions. I got all that after watching it live. I also disagree that Atlanta is a more complete team.

I would have to disagree with your disagreement. The Panthers are even more incomplete than the Colts. At least the Colts suck on both sides of the ball.

I think it's completely evident that Atlanta has a more complete team. Panthers pretty much suck in 2 out of 3 phases of the game.
