I don't hate The Golden Calf of Bristol because of his religion... I dislike The Golden Calf of Bristol because he is still an overhyped gimmick player that is currently getting by as a QB in the NFL...

FWIW, if John Fox would have been forced to play Armanti Edwards here like he was The Golden Calf of Bristol in Denver, the Panthers might have gotten lucky a little more often last year too... I'm not saying AE is as good as The Golden Calf of Bristol at certain things, but their style is absolutely similar...

i have absolutely no problem with the guy... i just fail to see what's so spectacular about him... the cult of personality is stunning.

Honestly, I could write a doctoral dissertation behind the sociological reason behind this two-month phenomenon. But I really think it has to do with a bunch of reasons, some bigger and some smaller in the grand scheme of things, but all of them working in conjunction to create this "spectacularity" if you will grant me the neologism.

I mean, off the top of my head, writing this post, I think these are some of the factors in The Golden Calf of Bristol Phenom:

1. He's a Christian in a country that's still (ostensibly) majority Christian.

2. He wears his faith on his sleeve even though it's not necessarily PC to do so. This creates controversy. controversy breeds attention, attention breeds factions, factions breed hate/devotion.

3. He is committed to his faith but doesn't PREACH at you; mainly just states what he thinks and leaves it at that. This makes him accessible to people who don't necessarily agree with his standpoint.

4. He seems like he truly believes in winning over individual stats.

5. He seems like he truly believes in power of team.

6. No experts believed he could succeed on this level at all. This creates an adversity, and makes people cheer for him.

7. He gives credit to everyone but himself. He SEEMS truly humble. This, again, makes him accessible and noteworthy in a world where most celebrities, not just athletic celebrities, are out for themselves.

8. He seems completely genuine, and caring for his fellow man, i.e. his volunteer work and his work with kids with cancer, etc.

9. going along with number 8, he doesn't seem like he's doing this for a glory-grab, or that it's a deliberate facade to get attention for himself:

Sunday: The usual.

Total time spent with media on non-game days: 83 minutes.

Total minutes in six days: 8,640.

Percentage of The Golden Calf of Bristol's life spent with media last week: 0.9 percent.

Doesn't seem like too much of a distraction to me.

10. The way he's winning generates a lot of press, and therefore garners more attention.

11. He SEEMS like a genuinely good role model.

That last may be a summation of the net benefit of the first 10, but I honestly think it's the key. Fact is, in the West at least, we NEED people to look up to, to guide us and help us along our paths. Not saying that's a good thing or a bad thing, but it is what it is. Problem is, times are troubled, and cynical. There's no one to look up to anymore. No example. Our Governors sell senate seats and have sex scandals in argentina, our government bitches and whines about each other like a bunch of kindergarteners, our corporations are only about money, our celebrities are a bunch of vacuous gits, and even our religious leaders are a bunch of hypocrites: mainly the public ones, Ted Haggard et. al. We need someone to look up to, but no one is there. Is it any surprise, then, that people are going to latch onto The Golden Calf of Bristol? No, I don't think it is.

Now notice in a lot of my reasons I put "seems" or "appears." Fact is none of us know this man, he could lose his next ten games and be benched next year, or the secret love child he had by a philippino girl could come out next year, or whatever. It would be no surprise, really. We're used to role models and icons disappointing us at this juncture. BUT...it demonstrates the need for people to have some kind of role model when just the APPEARANCE of the genuine article sets everyone to frenzy. Here's hoping The Golden Calf of Bristol is as real as he seems.
