The Hell that must freeze over for the Panthers to make the playoffs

Don't Division winners get an automatic berth?

Panthers are 1-2 in the NFC South, tied with Tampa Bay and Atlanta. The Saints are 3-1.

If the Saints lose to Atlanta (unlikely) in Week 16, and the Panthers beat the Falcons and Bucs in Charlotte (possible since they should've beaten both on the road), then both would be 3-2 heading into New Orleans in Week 17 with a chance to win the NFC South and get an automatic spot in the Playoffs.

If Division winners automatically go to the Playoffs, then the Panthers could finish 4-2 in Division, 7-9 overall, and make the Playoffs just like a 7-9 Seattle team did last season.

All the Panthers really need to care about is winning out in Division, and hope the Falcons beat the Saints.

But division winner is determined by overall record first then division record.

You guys know that three teams from the same division are allowed to go to the playoffs, right? Atlanta being the 5th seed and us being the 6th is more likely than anything else I've seen you guys post.

If the Panthers finished in my scenario as a Division winner, they'd be higher than a 5th seed, and they'd get one Playoff game in Charlotte.

That makes no sense. Overall record should be "overall" record, Divison should be "division" record.

What kind of sense does that make?

If the Panthers were 4-2 in the NFC South (7-9 or 8-8 overall) and the Saints were 3-3 (11-5 or 10-6 overall), how could the Saints be the "Division" winner just because they have a better overall record? I can see if they're both 4-2, then it would make sense.

What sense would it be for the Panthers to be division champs if Saints went 14-2 with 4-2 division record while the Panthers went 6-10 with a 6-0 division record?

We are not going to the playoffs this year. I would be thrilled if we win our last 4 games but honestly care most about beating the Falcons this Sunday and Tampa on the 24th. Why?? Because they are home games and I will be there. I absolutely hate going to a game and hearing the other team hooting and hollering as they leave the stadium.

My feeling is that opposing fans can feel free to talk crap before the game, but I want to be the only one who has reason to be talking crap after the game because we won.

Besides at 5-11 or 6-10, that is exactly what I predicted we would be at the beginning of the season. If we do better then that, this year would have surpassed all my expectations.

8-8 would be a miracle in and of itself. That would not only show a lot of will the team has, but a strong building block for next year. The Lions proved that last year. A healthy defense and strong draft class will keep us competitively at #1 in the NFCS for some years to come.

Of course it is overall record first and should be. The whole concept of using divisions to determine winners and seedings is an issue. Like last year when Seattle wins the division gets a home game with a 7-9 record while a team like Tampa goes 10-6 and misses the playoffs altogether because there were 2 wildcards with better records or tiebreakers. I know there was discussion about getting rid of the divisional winners automatically getting a home playoff game last year even if they have a poorer record than their opponent.

Due to tradition I am fine with the whole division concept, but I can see the issue with automatically hosting the playoff game. Especially if you play in a crappy division.

That sounds logical. But I guess the NFL's theory is that the team with the most wins is the division winner, and division wins would come into play in tie breaking scenarios.

Add a divisional championship game pre-playoffs.

No. Just no. The NFL is not going to start impersonating college football. There is a reason people want college football to start following the NFL-because all the extra stupid crap they do over complicates things.

The team with the best record wins their division. Divisional record is only a method of determining tie-breakers. I don't know how someone could be a hardcore football fan and not know this...(not speaking to you I don't think)

This affects us because if we win out and finish with the same record at Atlanta we would hold the the breaker over them.

The NFL should not start impersonating the amateur hour that is the NCAA.

Still makes no sense.

A 4-2 Division winner doesn't win the Division just because their "overall" record is worse than a team that's 3-3 in Division?

Well then Divisions don't matter.

Divisions do matter. Except the NFL isn't stupid enough to follow what the NCAA is doing so you dont have garbage teams going to meaningful games over good teams.
