Football Outsiders DVOA:

Offense: 6th

Defense: 31st

Special Teams: 30th

Important offensive stats:

Yards per drive: 7th (35.5 YPD)

Points per drive: 5th (2.15)

TDs per drive: 4th (.244)

Punts per drive: 8th (.374)

Turnovers per drive: 22nd (.145)

Average starting field position: 22nd (27.47)

Drive success rate (avoiding 3 and outs): 6th (.728)

Red zone attempts per game: 5th (3.8)

Red zone TDs per game: 4th (2.1)

Red Zone TD percentage: 10th (55%)

Yards per game: 5th (397.6)

Points per game : 8th (24.2)

Rushing yards per game: 5th (137.6)

Passing yards per game: 8th (260.0)

Two things stand out to me. First our red zone TD percentage. In two weeks it has gone from ranked 21st to 10th. I think Chud and Cam are really starting to find their comfort zones with each other in the red zone and it is finally starting to pay off.

The second thing is I think the last 2 games shows just how good our offense will be once they limit their turnovers (36.5 PPG). This offense if Chud sticks around (and that is a big if) and Cam continues to progress, has a chance to be special over the next several seasons. Elite. Top 3 in the NFL.

Important defensive stats:

Yards allowed per drive: 30th (36.40)

Points allowed per drive: 32nd (2.45)

TDs allowed per drive: 30th (.273)

Punts forced per drive: 30th (.347)

Takeaways per drive: 17th (.124)

Average opponents starting field position: 17th (28.23)

Opponents Drive success rate (forcing three and outs): 30th (.729)

Opponents red zone attempts per game: 23rd (3.4)

Opponent Red Zone TDs per game: 26th (2.0)

Opponents Red zone TD percentage: 24th (58.54%)

Total yards allowed per game: 21st (363.0)

Points allowed per game: 29th (27.0)

Rushing yards allowed per game: 27th (132.5)

Passing yards allowed per game: 15th (230.5)

Someone posted the other day "Our defense is fine. When our offense doesn't turn the ball over we are averaging less than 20 points allowed per game!!"

That sounds great in theory but if you take the 4 games we didn't turn the ball over (Jax, Wash, Indy, Tampa) our defense allowed 17 points per game in those 4 games. But those team's combined Points per game average is 15.5.

That means that even without the benefit of Panther's turnovers these teams are still operating at 110% efficiency against their average points per game.

If you eliminate the monsoon game the opposing offenses are operating at 117% efficiency against their average points per game. All without the benefits of Panther turnovers.

So even though our defense is holding teams to less than 20 PPG when our offense doesn't turn the ball over the defense is still not playing as well as you'd like in those games.

Our defense is improving but still has a long way to go.

Gotta really feel good about what these guys are building on offense.....

Can't wait until next year when they begin to address the D

No no no. We need to continue improving the offense. An efficient offense will always trump having a bad defense. A bad defense won't stop us from winning when our offense scores every drive.

Got to love fuged up logic.

While I think that some of this is hyperbole, to some degree that's not too far from the mark.

Look at Indy, a D that is very one dimensional and built to have a very high scoring O.

Dude, a high powered offense is most definitely 100% fun to watch, but I don't really wanna be another saints type team. You always will be in a shoot out in order to win games and just have to hope and pray our D does just enough to win. I don't know if that's the best model to build off of.

And even tho they have arguably the best signal caller @ the line of scrimmage in the last 14 years, how many superbowls have they won?

I have high expectations that Rivera can do the same here as he's done elsewhere...

I don't know that I'm advocating it either, just saying that its a model that has shown the possibility of success.

if you want to be relevant long term, you have to have at least that.

i think we've got it. if rivera can have close to the same success he's had with the bears and chargers defenses and we get beason back and help at a couple spots i have no doubt that we can be dominant on both sides of the ball. /run on sentence

That type of defense as a Panther fan is something I cannot accept. We've always been offensively inept so Cam is a breath of fresh air in that regard but we've always had a strong defense.

Rivera has been a top defensive coordinator for years now. The probability of him making this a top ten defense is very high, and when he does :D:D:D

This defense is embarrassing.
