Ok, legit debate (18 game theory)

I think it's a load of marketing bullshit Goodell is trying to do here with adding 2 more games on top of the 16 we already have.

Before 78 the 14 games that were there were kind of a little short for a season. IMO 16 is perfect.

Why 18? If only to make more money? These players get hurt, sometimes teams can't last the whole 16 weeks before their roster is depleted and there's a shitload of players on IR.

16 games is good enough, but when you add 2, you're only dragging out the season even more and increasing the possibility of injuries just by having more games, so eventually you can make even more stupid rules in the vein of your golden players (doesn't Brady have like 3 rules made because of himself?)

Here's my idea if you want to extend the season a bit more. 16 games thru 18 weeks. Every team gets 2 bye weeks. I think 3 would be too many, I'm trying to find a balance for teams to get healthy but at the same time not kill their momentum. 18 games is wayyy too much to ask for players to last that long.

but I'd be totally fine with leaving it the way it is with only 1 bye week.

I miss Tagliabue.:(

adalius thomas owns read this

”For me, the money thing, stop. Just stop. If you want to cry about money, then open your books up to an independent audit to show how much you’re really making,” Thomas said. ”If you really want to cry about money, open your books up, put what you really make in the paper like you put our salaries in the paper every year . . . why don’t you do the same thing?”

”So, the pre-season, let’s do the math. You’re selling tickets at the normal price. You take that, everyone in the locker room is the same, depending on what year you were,” Thomas said. ”Early-year guys get $400-or-$500 dollars (per game). The most you can get is $1,100-$1,200. So you’re telling me, Tom Brady is going to play a regular season game, for $1,200?

”Your ticket prices don’t change for pre-season, so why does our paycheck? Since they’re making all these rule changes. That doesn’t make any sense to me, we already get paid. No, you already get paid. Don’t give me that B.S. I’ve been around too long for that. That’s crazy.”

”I don’t see how it can’t be. Unless you’re going to pay me the way you pay me the other (regular season games), you’re going to have to increase my pay for the two others,” said Thomas, who was the union rep in Baltimore. ”Because in the contract, it says 16-17 regular season games. That’s how your pay is drawn. (the 17th check is for the bye week). So you’re telling me you’re going to add a week, but you’re going to pay me like the pre-season? We’re not doing that. Well, you can mark me down on the injured list for two weeks. You can put that in your books. You done lost your mind. ”

The current CBA allows them to add 2 games I believe. I do agree that if they play 18,they shouldn't get 16 game checks spread over 18 games though. The salaries should be adjusted. Ideally though they would leave it at 16 games. Much as I love the NFL, I don't thik 18 games are a good thing.

i don't think any of this will fly unless they increase the salary cap to help pay for the extra games. no way would they agree to it otherwise.

i would rather they extend it by a couple weeks and eliminate a couple preseason games. i hadn't thought of how much the players get paid for those two games but that just adds more fuel to the need to get rid of them. not only is it a meaningless game that they could needlessly get hurt in, it doesn't pay well.

it is going to boil down to taking away two preseason games and picking up 1 more game per team and one more bye week per team.

The league has always played 20 games since 1961, when they went to the 14 game season. They played 6 pre-season games then. When they went to the 16 game season, they dropped 2 of the pre-season games. At least if they go to 17 or 18 games, the tickets will be easier to move, assuming that adding 1 or 2 regular games will result in dropping 1 or 2 preseason ones. Most times, you can't even give the preseason games away. With just a couple preseason games, they would mean much more as far as getting the teams ready, and (hopefully) be more 'sellable' by being so. Hopefully!

I agree that the player compensation would have to be worked out. As Thomas was quated, the players are not going to play 18 on a 16 game salary.

But as far as the idea of adding games is concerned I won't mind it. The one thing that needs to change even if the NFL doesn't expand it's season is the addition of roster spots on each team. 53 players isn't enough now IMO with so many injuries. Expanding the season, that number becomes even less adequate. Between the starters, ST players, key reserves and then draftee development players, many teams are forced to let players walk even though they are needed.

As I said I think the roster number needs to increase no matter what but with an expanded season the need only increases.

    • THIS MIGHT PISS OFF SOME STEVE SMITH SR. FANS:  He WAS detrimental to this team.  Sure, he is on the hall of fame ballot and is probably our best player ever--but he punched 2 teammates--and that is the tip of the glacier.  Remember, I watched him haze and belittle Dwayne Jarrett at an OTA. Jarrett even reacted by giving me a hard hand slap when I mentioned it to him--.  I know bullying when I see it (educator who has written books about trauma caused by abuse and bullying) I have commented on the fact that nobody seemed to be friends with Smith except Kasay.  He was a bully and the coaches allowed it. Bunch of Alpha males chewing the tall grass. Here is a list of all the WRs Steve Smith 'mentored" after they were drafted:  2003: Walter Young 2004: Keary Colbert, Drew Carter 2007: Dwayne Jarrett, Rhyne Robinson 2010: Brandon Lafell,  Armanti Edward, David Gettis 2011: Kealoha Pilares 2012: Joe Adams That is 10 WRs drafted and only 1 had some degree of success, Brandon Lafell, who averaged around 600 yards a season for 8 years in the NFL--it is noteworthy that his numbers increased after leaving Carolina for NE.   This proves nothing, but it is interesting and coincides with the list of free agents we brought in during that time.  My argument:  It is possible that whatever Smith contributed to this team could be a result of bullying others into more diminished roles--Smith called it competition, and in fairness, he was the hardest practicing player I ever watched at OTAs over the years.  But it seems he was Napoleonic in his approach to teammates, possibly damaging the unit and keeping young players from developing--transitioning from college to the pros must be intimidating--especially when an established player is constantly attacking (challenging, to Smith) you as you are trying to learn the plays and culture.  It was so bad when I saw him doing it to Jarrett, it pissed me off.  I think Jarrett was pretty slow and was unsure of the plays etc--it was his rookie OTAs.  This is not proof, just an interesting possibility.  If you have ever had someone at your place of employment with some authority start harassing you, you might understand how a 21-year old kid might feel.
