Yas: Panthers didn't luck out on Newton

Luck has some issues which slowly became apparent as the year went on, particularly his accuracy when faced with real defensive pressure and speedy defenses.

I still think he has enough factors in his favor to make him the #1 pick, and if he turns out to be a bust it won't be because he wouldn't have tried to succeed. But don't let the media fool you into believing Luck is "can't-miss," most of them don't watch the players they talk about. He's not head and shoulders over your typical high-pick college QB in any particular area, he just happens to be very good in the majority of them.

I'm sure he'll be a good QB, possibly even elite, but if if both he and Cam maxed out their potential, Cam will still end up far ahead of him: the difference in sheer physical skill is tremendous.

Actually I have heard that many times from a number of different people. Also, I humbly disagree. But Newton will still be greater than Luck any day.

I've watched Luck in a number of his games this year. He's got potential to be a good QB in the NFL for sure.

I just haven't seen "superstar" written all over him like some have, I guess.

yeah...people want to throw out the "you heard it here first" tag, but it very rarely is the first time it's been thrown out and it''s been thrown out here quite a few times...actually lots going back to a year a go when he was a massive topic of conversation in the draft forum.

that said, i also agree that he won't be a bust. the dude just has far too much talent, he's too smart, and he has incredible intangibles. the only thing that will make him fall short of his potential is the situation he lands in. bad team and/or bad coaching staff will do more harm to his career than anything he'll do. him deciding to stay in school rather than enter the draft last year doesn't change that.

still....cam newton is going to have a more dynamic career. both are going to be great, though. i just hope luck lands in the AFC cause i'd like to see those two play in the superbowl one day.

it's more the tape from last year before he lost his pro-level coaching staff and most of his oline. he took a step back this year, but it wasn't his doing (unless you consider staying in school his doing which i guess it was).

we would have been good with either one and prior to lucks decision to stay last year i was saying that luck was my first choice followed closely by newton. if luck stayed then newton should be the pick. i'm glad luck stayed because i wouldn't want any other QB starting for us now.

This is a good point... he DID look better last year.

But I guess my follow up point is that he looked better last year with a "pro-level coaching staff" against college players.

How will it change when he's drafted by one of the worst teams in the league and with a "pro-level coaching staff" facing PRO-LEVEL PLAYERS week to week?

that's why i said in an earlier post, the only way he can "bust" is by being put in a bad situation. perennial bad team who is consistently picking high and has a high turnover rate in the coaching staff. that will do any QB damage.

look at alex smith, for example. people for years thought he was a bust. it was the easiest/laziest explanation for his lack of living up to his drafting. when you look more closely you see that he has never had the same OC for 2 years and he has, in fact, been asked to play in a different offensive scheme every year of his career. he is currently on his 5th head coach in 8 years?

how can that be good for the development of any QB? peyton manning would have failed in that situation. then you get a good HC/OC who is willing to build a system around your strengths and is willing to commit to you and then you see the success he's having currently.

Not to mention losing both of his starting WR's.

And this year, he was still doing great until his go to receiver got a bad concussion leaving him without any reliable targets, then he started to look human again. I truly don't get why so many are comparing Luck to Cam anyway. If Luck lives up to the hype, that does nothing to diminish what Cam is doing or our good fortune for having him on our team. Cam is a fantastic QB and I fully expect him to be in the conversation as an elite QB along with Rodgers and perhaps even Luck. Until his decision last year, I wanted Luck, but I can honestly say that I am as happy with Cam as I expected to be with Luck...but that doesn't mean I can't still appreciate Luck's talent.

They said the same things about ryan leaf too.. :jc:
ugh....there is no real comparison.

with leaf (and russell) the thinking was that despite the guy lacking any/all the intangibles, leadership, work ethic, etc. teams were thinking that since he had the build and a "cannon for an arm" they could coach the rest of the stuff in. they were wrong and it will be long time before you see teams making that mistake again.

that doofus from arkansas that the pats took a 4th round flyer on with hopes that he might at some point turn out to be trade bait is proof that teams aren't interested in size and cannon arm alone. they want more in the way of intangibles.

luck has all the intangibles, talent, and measurables you would want. same with newton.
