Critics were saying Newton didn’t have a desire to be great and that he had played in a college offense that was so simple it would be hard for him to pick up an NFL system.

"I think the thing that a lot of people really kind of miss out on as far as Cam is concerned is his commitment to being a great player in this league," Rivera said. "The young man really does do the things that you would expect of a No. 1 pick [and] what you would expect of a leader. He is committed to the game [and] he is committed to this football team."

The Panthers also spent lots of time talking to Newton’s coaches and teammates at Auburn. They had offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski and quarterbacks coach Mike Shula sit down with Newton for a lengthy film-room session. Chudzinski and Shula came back and told Marty Hurney and Rivera they had no doubt Newton could run their offense.

“I don’t think people really gave him enough credit for what they did or give them enough credit for what they do at Auburn,’’ Rivera said. “People always thought he was in a one-read offense. We went through the process learning about him and we came to learn that it really is not a one-read offense. There was a little bit more that he had to do as a football player.’’

I kept telling people this pre-draft (in other places, not in this forum since at that point all I was doing was lurking) and they refused to believe me.

As a matter of fact, I'm willing to bet that some people will STILL tell you that Ron Rivera is wrong and the Auburn offense was/is a one-read offense.

Yeah. I had that same fight on nearly a daily basis with some of the guys on here. It was more complex than it is given credit for. Water under the bridge now.

Actually, they kind of did, but no more so than any other draft choice.

You can do all the research in the world on a guy and still have something completely unexpected happen. Sometimes it's attitude (Ryan leaf) or could be durability (Dan Morgan) or just a complete and total "what the" that nobody saw coming (Rae Carruth).

There is a certain element of luck in drafting. If there weren't, then you'd never hear terms like "steal" and "bust".

good lord, the butthurt from the infamous decision that luck made in january still lingers to this day

I don't think he will bust but I admit there is a part of me that hopes he does. It has nothing to do with butthurt from his decision to go back to school it is because of the draftnik/media "he is the best QB prospect since Jon Elway" slobberfest over him that I personally think is unwarranted. I think he is the best QB in this upcoming draft but the hype is similar to the "game/match of the century" that happens every two years.
