Reaction to Cam's comments

I like the competitive desire Cam wants all the Panthers to have, but I've had a feeling he doesn't really want to be here, and comments like those only encourage that feeling. A lot can change in 2-3 years but I'll personally be surprised if he re-signs with the Panthers.

meh...quit being so emo.

don't take "he hates to lose" to "he hates being here".

that's quite a jump to take but if you want drama and a reason to hate being a panthers fan, then have at it.

i'm just getting tired of this "we suck no one that's any good wants to be here waa waa waa." crap.

suck it up.

This interview does worry me just a tiny little fraction, in a sense that I could see teammates and panther fans feeling alienated. But what I try to remember is he is only 22 years old and this is just one interview. I guess what worries me the most is I don't want him to become some media drama queen three or four years from now. Obviously the most troubling part was the "I'd have to find a new house" line. Worst case scenario is he turns into a T.O. type of media figure where he airs out all his emotions and thoughts publicly. I cringe at the thought of that happening.

But I think Cam is smarter and more aware than that and has enough support around him not to get caught up into that mess.

Best part of the interview was the end, almost gives me chills. Paraphrasing, "football is not my job, it is my life."

we aren't winning now so we'll always suck! WE COULD NEVER WIN ENOUGH!!!! BOO HOO!!!!!!!!

ugh.

do you guys not think he is helping to build a team while he builds himself into a great QB? do you not think he realized that he was going to be going to a bad team that was just starting a rebuild?

do you guys think that this is anywhere near the finished product?

the wins are coming. until then, put your big girl panties on and deal with it.

I just wonder how much money/winning is going to keep him here.

OK, again, why would Cam ever want to leave a team that:

- Overlooked all the trash surrounding him in the draft, taking what was seen as a franchise-killing chance on him despite heavy criticism from the media

- Designed an offensive system that accentuates his many abilities and had him lead it from the first snap

- Has made him the face of the franchise and talked him up repeatedly to the media

- Would be a winning team in his first year if not for injuries

- Isn't all that far from his hometown so friends and family can still visit him

- Has shown a willingness to spend big on homegrown talent, and has a great track record of hanging on to its stars (Pep being the exception, and frankly, we had someone right behind him ready to step up)

- Is already mentioned as a premium destination for free agents because of him?

He has no reason to leave here, no desire to leave here, and unless he is completely oblivious to the world around him should be very aware that he landed in an excellent organization and situation that has an extremely bright future. We may have been a bad team last year, but we are not devoid of talent or coaching. The margin for wins and losses in the NFL has less to do with talent than execution anyways.

Face it, we're stuck with Cam for a looooong time ;D

I hope they cut those non-performing players. Send a message to the people. Non-greatness will not be tolerated.

Cam is signaling those who are not contributing, if I have to carry this team myself, I will. Cam has more running yards, than several players on the team, cam has more receiving yards than several on the team. If Cam can take your spot, maybe you don't deserve your spot.

totally agreed.

agree with it or not, cam's mindset is exactly the mindset they want this team to have. i know there are others on the team that have it, but, like i've said before, they don't have the big and contagious personality that he does nor do they have the platform he has to share his passion. other players are borderline, but they are quite capable of getting on board. they are the sheep and there is nothing wrong with having sheep in an organization as long as they can help you reach your goal. there's nothing wrong with being a sheep either as long as you are headed in the right direction and you've got a good leader.

there are those, though, who are riding on the negative side of the fence who are fill of doubt and cynicism. those guys will be the first against the wall. there is no place for doubt and discord when you are trying to build a winning team. everyone has to adopt the same mentality and mindset of being great and reaching the goal. if you aren't on board, then you are just going to be in the way of growth and development and need to be cut out like a cancer.

then there are those apathetic people who just don't care and can't be pushed. these need to be cut out as well.

you can't build a winning franchise unless you have a team that hates to lose and has an insatiable desire to win and be great. you can't just hope to be "just good enough" and expect to be great. you have to want to be the best and not accept being anything less.

that's cam's mindset. i believe it's rivera's mindset as well. he's worked his way to the top in whatever role he was asked to fill and he's always been a part of winning teams. this is the mindset that this team IS going to have and they'll do it by persuading those who can be persuaded and cutting out those who can't be and replacing them with those who can.

Football players give a lot more stock to what you do on the field versus what you say in the media. Guys in the locker room care about how he plays QB not about how he interviews. Look at what James Harrison said about Roethlisburger and other members of his team. I can't tell that there is a big rift in their locker room.

Do you remember when Beason held out his rookie year and there was a lot of speculation that it would cause ill feelings and he would want to leave when he could?? He signed a long term extension this past year.

Right now the players and team are excited about where we are headed. The offense is built around Newton and he knows it. There is no guarantee that he would be better off anywhere else. As someone else said, Newton knows we took a chance on him and he seems to be the kind of guy who is loyal. I think these conversations are way premature at this point. I realize that given how valuable he is to our franchise that people will worry but honestly it is chicken little logic.

My reaction?

We finally have our franchise QB! :D :D :D

Exactlyyyy, and I'm pumped about it! And it really baffles/bothers me that there are still a select few out there (we're talkin' Panthers FANS here) that are still knocking the guy for god knows what and are still not on board. :out: I guess it really is impossible to make everybody happy. I mean how can you not be happy about the future of this franchise??

    • When we drafted Luke, we already had Cam, Smith, Olsen, Stewart, Deangleo, Gross, Kalil, CJ, Hardy, Beason, TD, Gamble (and maybe more I'm forgetting), we had a lot of great pieces in place. Going pure BPA for a player with Luke's potential when the LB you already have is different when you already have all those pieces in place.  Our OL right now is probably in a better shape than that team and our RBs and TE have potential compared to proven vets back then, but after that, the 2012 roster was in a far better shape than we are right now. We need a #1 WR, DEs, LBs, DBs, C, and depending who you ask a QB.  Going BPA at pick #5 when that player is a DT and your current best player on either side of the ball is a DT, seems irresponsible. If he's the only player they like that high left, then you trade back and go with position of more need at a slot that makes sense for the player while adding other picks.  If you trade back and he falls because other teams don't need/want a DT, then you consider him at that point because of the value.
    • This sounds like the same back and forth when we drafted a LB when we already had a LB or as mentioned prior back to back DLs. I want the BPA, if it is another DT so be it. (No not a kicker/punter for those people that think they are funny))
    • I’m hoping SMU messes it all up and wins out. Imagine the SEC & BI0 would crap themselves trying to “fix” the problem.
