Numbers that should be retired...

I realize as a matter of practice that the Panthers do not believe in retiring numbers, and part of me likes this as a symbol that this organization values the team above any individual player, but ultimatley I think this young organization would derive greater benefit from the pride and tradition the retiring of numbers creates. Here's my list of numbers that should be retired by the Panthers:

51 = Sam Mills obviously, word is that this number is unofficially retired.

58 = Mark Fields, was a significant contributor and was ultimatley forced to retire due to a potentially life-threatening illness. Didn't like seeing Davis pick this number right up and run with it, Fields will never say this but I'm sure it hurt.

30 = Mike Minter, Panthers "lifer" who was a significant contributor. I think anyone who spends the entirety of a long career with the Panthers while contributing at a high-level should be in consideration for having their number retired. Feels odd seeing Godfrey run around out there with it.

93 = Mike Rucker, see Minter above.

4 = Kasay, the original Panther, nuff said.

Others?

Kasay, maybe..maybe.

That should be reserved for Great players....not good ones.

If Smith plays for another 7-8 years at a high level, I could see his retired....possibly.

Totally agree about Smith in another few years but all of the other players mentioned should be in a 'Ring of Honor'......but not having their numbers retired.

fred Lane--- seriously ..... wtf?

RETIRED????

I agree with Kasay & mills for obvious reasons.

Well, I was thinking Fred Lane because he had such a promising start with the Panthers but then I read the wiki article about him - wasn't aware of all the personal bad stuff he had going on... and forgot that we actually traded him to the Colts, so I retract that nomination.

None. There is nobody who has played here that is even worthy of the hall of fame, let alone jersey retirement. We have had great players at the end of their careers. But they weren't here long enough for jersey retirement consideration. Just my opinion!

Kasay has a shot at hall numbers

386/473 81.6 percent 1634 points, 11th all time in points.

He'll move into the top ten next season and end up in 8th place at the end of the season. Two or three more years and he would be in the top 5 in points, FG's and FG's Attempted. He could end up being as high as third on the all time Kicker points list.

He definitely deserves it when he retires.

i think retired jerseys should be for those folks who help the team win a championship or transformed the teams identity.

Agree 100%. Walter Payton, Johnny Unitas, Jim Brown, etc. Those are guys that need jerseys retired. Just because a guy is an above average player and has a long career doesn't mean he should get his number retired (Minter, Rucker, kasay). Jersey retirement should be for all time greats.
