That doesn't make sense. Why would we pay him 9 million instead of 7?

I still don't think we will use him as an amnesty right away. Maybe we will at the trade deadline if we make a deal and have to make it under the tax line. Maybe we will next off season.

There is no reason to amnesty him right now besides the fact it is irritating he is not performing. In fact, IMO using the amnesty right now on Diop would be just as disappointing a decision from our front office as trading for him in the first place.

Cap space. Plain and simple.

We don't need the cap space unless we are going to be big players in FA.

Right now we are at ~47.5 million

After we sign the rookies we will be ~52 million

Lets say we sign Kwame at around 3 years 12 million ~56 million

That leaves us with 14 million dollars before we hit the tax line and 2 roster spots open. I would be shocked if we used up half that.

I was told you get to use the amnesty clause once during the new CBA. I don't see the point of using it now. Next year, Diaw's 9 million is off the book, and the year after that Diop and Maggette's numbers are off the book. Unless you want to make a run at a Marc Gasol this season or a Paul next year, you might as well wait, and keep it in your back pocket for some bad contract down the road.

We'll have a lot of cap room and be in position to make a run at a top flight free agent or two in two years and keep the flexibility of the amnesty clause. Why mess all that up so we can sign Nene or somebody like that right now? Are we really a Nene or West away from contending?

You are right that we can only use it once, but it can also only be used on players already under contract. So if we make a bad signing in the future we are stuck with it.

IMO, we need a center, but there aren't a lot of quality guys available right now and we would overspend to get them. Basically, if we amnesty Diop we would just replace him with another crappy contract that expires even further down the road. I say just hold on to it until we have a better option.

Oh, ok. Then I guess you have to decide if you want to use the clause relatively soon on a Diop, a Maggette, or a Carroll (the best reason to use Maggette is some one would pick up part of the contract in the new auction format, so you don't have to pay the whole thing) or save it if you're scared about the Tyrus Thomas contract going bad.

With the addition of Derrick Brown, here is what our roster looks like.

PGs: Augustin, Walker ®

SGs: Henderson, Carroll

SFs: Maggette, Brown, Najera

PFs: Thomas, Diaw, White

C: Biyombo ®, Diop

We stil have 3 spots open. Cunningham hasn't singed offer sheet but is a RFA. We may or may not have a need for him now that Brown has been signed. Also, Kwame is still a FA and I'd like us to sign Reggie Williams.

Walker

Henderson

Maggette

Thomas

Diaw

Augustin

Carroll

Brown

White

Biyombo

Thats how I see the lineup shaking itself out eventually. We go small, run n gun. Get a top 5 pick and let Diaw and Diop walk. With the right moves, this team can be a playoff contender in a year or two.

Love the Williams signing, was one dude I thought we could realistically get and be of value.

So now our roster looks like this:

PGs: Augustin, Walker ®

SGs: Henderson, Williams, Carroll

SFs: Maggette, Brown, Najera

PFs: Thomas, Diaw (Starting Center), White

C: Biyombo ®, Diop, Ely

So that's 14 people on the roster, room for one more. Maybe a tall PG.

As much as I like Tyrus he is looking more and more tradable. What sucks is that we still owe Bulls a draft pick from that trade, if I am not mistaken. Tyrus is just a strange dude and he sees a bit aloof and out of it. Him and Boris are viable trade options.

I agree. Outside of his 17 ft jumpshot..there isn't much else that he brings that Biz doesn't already do. With Mullens looking like he could be the center of the future, might mean Biz could be the PF of the future. Maybe moving tyrus and diaw for picks or cap space?
