Claiborne vs Kirk Fitzpatrick

Jackofalltrades

I may be biased, but Janoris Jenkins impresses me more than these two. I think he has basically started every game in his college career. And his performance last year on Green, Jeffery, and Jones was great. Although he lacks size when compared to others he makes up for it in aggressive play.

These other two may just have more potential.

As for the other two:

I like Claiborne better because I think he has better combination of size and ball skills. He is better in coverage than Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick is overrated IMO. He is a great physical specimen and can lay the wood. But when it comes to coverage, Claiborne seems to be around the ball more. Dre gets beat more in coverage.

Coverage/shutdown skills: Jenkins (Claiborne 2nd)

Ball Skills: Claiborne (Jenkins 2nd)

Physical play: Kirkpatrick (Claiborne 2nd)

I have watched 3 LSU game's this year and have watched Claiborne on every defensive snap of those 3 games. It is very frustrating watching him play because opposing offenses very rarely throw his direction. I am serious.. they throw at Mattheiu and the other corner all game long and only throw 2-3 passes in Claiborne's direction each game. He reminds me of Charles Woodson in college, and I would not make that comparison lightly. Claiborne is an 'off-man corner', his one weakness would be his jam.. he would not be a good bump and run corner.. luckily we don't play press man often. He would be just fine in our zone scheme. Charles Woodson plays in a zone scheme in Green Bay. Claiborne runs a consistent 4.4 forty time.. has outstanding ball skills... the best in the country. This will be a lockdown corner for 10 years. He will definately have teams looking to Gamble's direction more often which is exciting.

I have only watched 2 ALabama games, and I was watching both Kirkpatrick and Josh Chapman.

Kirkpatrick is a long corner at 6'2".. he has longer arms and is stronger than Claiborne.. that's all I will give to Kirkpatrick. He runs a 4.5 forty time.. but very quick and agile for his size. He is strong enough to reroute receivers and has decent jam on the LoS. However, you would think he would be able to handle guys like Alshon Jeffrey, whom are big AND fast.. but that is his weak point.. he can't handle guy's like Julio Jones, or Brandon Marshall, etc.

Claiborne truly is worth the 7-8 spot differential.. yes, it would be nice to pick up an extra 2nd rounder though if that were an option. But, we would definintely get less quality of a player.

Claiborne = Charles Woodson type like Lout said above me. I know I take some crap on this board for talking him up but I do believe that by March 80% of this board will be praying he falls to us at around 5 or 6 or wherever we end up picking. Right now I think he goes #3 overall in the draft behind Luck and Kalil but he could potentially fall to #5 if a team covets RG3 or Barkley and takes them above Claiborne. I don't see him falling past #5 in any scenario.

Kirkpatrick is more of an Antrell Rolle/Charles Tillman type. He has great size but Im not sure he really has the coverage skills to be an elite cover CB hes basically going to be Charles Tillman IMO. I know its said a lot about big corners but he could probably be a great safety if he made the position switch. It might take him a few years but I think he could be great there by year 3 or 4. Maybe think of him as the CB to safety version of Thomas Davis like how Davis was a S but converted to a LB. Years 1-3 he'd be raw, hed wow you every once in a while but he'd also make some dumb plays but by year 4 and on he would be a beast of a safety.

I 100% agree with the Charles Tillman comparison. I think Kirkpatrick can and will play CB at the next level though.
