McDermott struggling to get Panthers' defense on track

Rookie coaches need the off season more than the players do.

When you look at our trouble spots: Defensive line, Linebackers, and Special teams, those coaches combine a total of 10 years of NFL experence ( 6 for Murphy, 0 for Bellin, 4 for Washington). I'd also mention that this is the NFL rookie year for both of our strength and conditioning coaches as well. I'm not blaming them for the injuries, but we are only 2 IR's away from making the NFL record of 14.

Compare that number to our offensive coaches;

OLine- Masko 20

QB - Schula - 20

Recievers -Gray-10

Tight Ends - Hoener - 13

Running Backs -Settle - 4

It's not inconceivable that coaches with little NFL experience are having trouble getting their players to respond to veteran techniques that they themselves have had little experience with.

It's not all the players fault, it's not all the coaches fault, they both get the blame.

And if Cam wasn't so good, we've hardly noticed..

agreed about the coaching staff needing a full offseason and experience and that even extends to rivera.

people will look at him and harbaugh and see two roookie head coaches, but i don't put them on the same level.

for rivera, it's been all about coaching a position and running a defense. shifting to head coach is a big shift in managerial responsibilities. harbaugh is accustomed to the responsibilities. the fact that his experience in coaching is largely limited to the college ranks doesn't make that much of a difference.

rivera is having to learn his role as a head coach on the fly. having a year under his belt will really help him and i can promise that if he has any desire to grow and a willingness to learn that he will be running things differently heading into next year.

his mindset will be more where it's supposed to be, he'll know better what is expected of him and where to get involved and where to get out of the way and let your assistants take care of business. he will have an opportunity to fine what he wants to do and what he is doing.

the team will also have a better understanding of what the rivera & co. want from them and will have had time to work with them in more of a educational capacity with more of a long view rather than just trying to make things work from week to week.

Too many key injuries and not enough preparation time to give McDermott a fair chance. Losing Beason was huge. He was more than a leader, he was an example of how to do things right. He corrected players when they lined up in the wrong position and a lot of times would go sideline to sideline and make tackles to save big plays when other players messed up. Truly one of the best LB's in the game at the time of his injury. Losing him cost the defense dearly.

Harough iswinning with a proven winning formula.

Great defense, good running game, and decent qb play.

Ie. Foxball.

extemely entertaining to see how many like harbough, considering how many hate fox.

I don't. Harbaugh is going to be one and done in the playoffs, too. Ground and pound is a relic of the NFL, and MY style of football is finally taking over.

I've always believed a high powered offense is the key to superiority in football, and this has been a long time coming, but fruition of my philosophy is finally coming forth. All the best teams, Packers, Saints, Pats, Lions, etc have high powered offenses. The league has been slow to adapt, but this isn't going anywhere soon. The passing game will rule for years to come.

You saw what happens when Foxball (Broncos) met new age of NFL offense (Lions & Packers). Absolute destruction.
