Giving our defense excuses

ok...problem here is that the ravens have been running the same system for how long?

of course it's going to be a lot easier for someone to step into a well established system and do ok. going back to teh Mike being the QB of the defense (which most thinking people would consider a fair comparison) look at the pats when brady went out for the year. they had a successful system in place that they had been running for years and a team full of talent, the majority of which had been around for a long time, that allowed them to go ahead and win 12(?) games that year.

very few teams can pull off something like that. missing a starting player on either side of the ball isn't something that teams can usually do without seeing a significant drop off. losing the QB or MLB (or whomever is the voice of the coaches and the established leader on the field) is even tougher.

for a team that is in the situation that the panthers are in where they have such a young team in a brand new system lacking key pieces (largely due to injury) you just can't expect them to some in and play as if nothing happened. ugh.

reading comprehension is not your strong suit, esp. when you're just running on emotion.

when did i say that losing beason was the main reason?

it's a major factor, just like all of the other things that happened.

yes, beason was starting last year and they were mediocre. we would have a winning record if we had a mediocre defense right now, which we don't because of all the things working against it this year.

no...coaching is not getting the best out of these guys. you want to know why? or is it just easier for you to throw out a simple but very incomplete and narrow-minded answer like "these guys just suck!!!!!".

if you want to know the real reason why...

young and relatively inexperienced team

+

brand new system

+

lack of offseason to prepare

+

key ingredients to the scheme missing (beason, TD, edwards) and replaced by inferior (and/or inexperienced @ DT) talent

=

underachieving defense and problems with the coaching staff getting the most out of their team.

again, the good thing is that most of those issues will be fixed heading into next year.

also, as has been pointed out, they have another year to add to the defense. they spent more resources upgrading the offense than defense because the offense needed the most work. this coming offseason they can/will fix the defense.

btw...i'm not going to address your assessment of charles johnson or chris gamble. i figure others will tear you up enough on that.

Really? I didn't know Rex Ryan was still the D cor in Baltimore they must still be running that scheme...O wait they have a 1st year D cor over there because the cor after Rex went to Michigan to coach...

Must be the players keeping the scheme in check...Too bad our player's can't do that.

and this post solidifies that..

you really don't understand that the Raven's D didn't switch drastically in scheme compared to the Panthers?

do you understand football at ALL?

Hey everyone let's take Rayzor's list of issues and mark them all as fixed next season because that's whats going to happen. Worst defense in Panthers history ain't going to fixed in one off season...

Correct me if i'm wrong but were not running a 4-3 with nickel mixed in?

clearly you don't understand the difference between a standard Cover 2 defense and a Zone blitzing defense..

and really, majority of people are wrong on that.. we've been playing a TON of man coverage..

worst offense in panthers history was pretty much fixed in one season with a shortened offseason.

why not the defense with a full offseason?

Rayzor I'm not gonna argue on a forum with you...Your right this is just a transition period...If we had any talent at all it could make the transition easier, but we don't...So give the young D a few years so they can just be bad rather then awful.

there are numerous factors they had working in their favor to turn around the offense so quickly that they won't have this upcoming offseason. i'm sure people could easily figure out what they are though sometimes I think people intentionally keep themselves uninformed so they can continue on being blindly optimistic

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
