Giving our defense excuses

I think the issue is the discussion around scheme versus formation. He was arguing that since we stayed in the same 4-3 formation rather than changing for example to a 3-4 should have made the transition easier and there is no reason for us to struggle so much. You and rayzor are arguing that while we are still a 4-3, the scheme is different to the point that it is just as different as if we went to a different formation.

The point about the Ravens was a little superfluous and irrelevant because they have had the same formations, schemes and most importantly personnel for years.

For me the problem this year is learning a new scheme, lack of appropriate personnel, injuries forcing us to juggle the lineup every week so there is no chemistry, and inexperience and lack of depth at most positions. I think McDermott and Rivera will be much better next year with this defense. If nothing else all the injuries and playing of rookies have given the starters and backups tons of experience. The same thing happened in 2004 which set us up for a pretty terrific 2005.

I originally pointed out the scheme changed and somehow Ravens were brought up in a rebuttal...

I guess all the confusion came from an irrelevant point..

Your last 4-5 posts are pointless...

I was just using the Ravens because a backup linebacker came in and had no drop off...Where as with us he goes out and we allow Kevin Smith to rush for 160 yards and score 3 tds...

It's just a little bit frustrating, in football the next guy is supposed to step up...Our guys are not talented enough to step up.

I think the ravens post was pointless and irrelevant as well. As for not having the talent, that is partially true but I think there are other factors as well which I pointed out. I don't agree for example that Edwards and Beason won't make a difference next year. I also think that Fua and McClain will not be rookies next year so actually I expect some big improvement. I would actually like to see how Fua plays at the 3 technique as well as the backup NT next year. I am not sure I would draft a NT next year but rather an impact 3 technique guy. Frankly it is too early to make any choices given we don't even know where we will pick and who will be available, but I actually think that many of the young inexperienced guys may make an impact next year. I just don't count on any rookies to come in year one and make a huge impact. And that included Cam this year. Fortunately I was pleasantly surprised.

sorry, but that's too simplistic an answer.

first....we didn't just lose one starter. we lost three. three vital ones. three that just aren't that easy to replace, esp. on such a young team going through a rebuild.

they guys left after we lost 3 starters (three of our most talented and experienced players) were either unprepared or incapable of filling in and playing at a level that was needed. backups are backups for a reason...they usually just aren't good enough to be starters. others are relatively raw talents having to learn a new scheme.

this is a team going through a rebuild and it takes time to get to the point that the ravens are. they have a lot more experienced talent that have spent years in that system. they know their roles better than the guys here.

it's going to take time to get our level of talent up and get guys experienced in this system. time that it seems you either don't realize it takes or are just unwilling to give them.

This is TRUTH! When a central focus of your defense goes down, it's kinda hard to dictate what you want to do. Try driving your car with three blown wheels... I mean, it'll take you where you wanna go... but it's not gonna do it very effectively. lol
