A bit annoyed with #89

More excuses for Smitty from the huddle. Panthro is spot on and I think Smitty himself would agree, I doubt he'd give any other reason other than being mistakes. He needs to concentrate and not make stupid mistakes, more is expected of him. I do think it's great that he has that fire back though and for Smitty that may mean these types of calls. There are elite receivers who don't draw the penalties and no one should be excused for stupid mistakes.

If you hit someone after the whistle or clearly out of bounds, that is stupid. If you stomp someone to get back at them that is dirty. But penalties for holding aren't stupid. They happen on every play but aren't called most of the time. I would rather have him be aggressive and risk a holding call than have him not block aggressively because he is afraid of a penalty. That would be stupid. Show me an elite receiver who is known to be a great blocker who hasn't gotten a holding call this year. I know there must be one I don't know who it would be.

His bonehead plays are because he can't block doesn't know when to let go. If he cleans that up then he will be fine but that has been part of his game since he got here. Never been a great blocker.

You are allowed to lock up with a defender and use your hands. You can't extend your hands or hold on if he isn't in front of you. Given they are in space and moving, it is hard to effectively block and not hold. It isn't like the defensive man isn't doing the same thing. But the rules favor the defender on blocking just like it favors the receiver on passing plays. He does the same thing on 30 plays and gets called for holding once a game. Hard to stop something that works 29 out of 30 times. And you are totally wrong, Smitty is known as a great blocker.

I am not narrowing it down to one play I am talking in general. Smitty makes some stupid mistakes and because Smitty is so good, that is what makes them stupid. Bad calls are made all the time but I am talking about stupid mistakes like getting hit in the hands. I don't expect him to be perfect but he has a few bonehead plays this year. He more than makes up for it though and we have way bigger issues so all of this is moot.

The holding that called back cam's game winning TD was legit...really dumb play on the opposite side of the field.

Nah, that was a ticky-tak call - I see worse that isn't called in every game, especially from teams who are 'contending'.

Tell me that ain't true :nono:

I agree he makes mistakes like most players do. I just don't think they are stupid when he is doing them in the heat of battle. Maybe evaluated after the fact by people not in the situation it looks like that but for the most part he is trying to make a play and help the team. I don't fault him for fire and effort. As long as he isn't taking a cheap shot or doing something to retaliate, I have no problem with it, but that's me.

It's not unusual for an aging receiver to start getting more penalty calls against him for things like pushing off on routes and holding whole blocking.

Resurgence aside, Smith is still up there in NFL years. Good as he may still be, he's not in his prime anymore.

The Panthers really do need to make sure we have a successor ready to go in the next two years (three at most).

Smith is a great downfield blocker. I guess that's why he takes some holding penalties, some deserved, but many undeserved.

Only problem I've ever had with smith is he drops alot of balls, but so many of his receptions - he might be the guy in the world who could make them.

I've been wishing this for quite awhile.
