Tis the Season...Worst Christmas Present you ever got?

Old Spice soap on a rope.

When I was like 9 years old.

At my advanced age now, I would be very happy with this gift.

At the time, the only thing my 9 year old brain could process was "do I smell?".

They still make that stuff? I loved it when playing football...you could hang it in your locker. Of course that was before manly body washes.

I generally do not get presents on Christmas. When I do it is normally someone new in my life because when the topic arises I ask them to donate some money to a charity. A few years after dating my fiancee I witnessed the most childish act by a group of adults. They gave me a $1 electronic game made for a child in an attempt to belittle me. Their exact words as I opened it was, "We heard you like video games." They had a problem with her and I because I didn't bolt the second that we had children like their boyfriends had.

I haven't received a truly terrible gift in a while, mostly just Christmas cards at birthdays, birthday cards at Christmas, etc.

When I was growing up, re-gifting was the norm for extended friends and relatives.

On my eighth birthday, our neighbors gave me a grocery bag full of heavily-used toys originally made for children half my age

On my tenth Christmas, I was given a comb and a set of defective bathtub crayons from an uncle and aunt

On my 16th Christmas my new Grandmother/ former Aunt (veeeery long story) gave me a cheap insurance company calculator and a disposable camera

The worst I ever got was one given to me to teach me a lesson. So it was at the same time the best and the worst.

I was about 12 and into building model boats - battleships, carriers, destroyers, and the like. This particular Christmas morning my uncle shows up with the customary stack of gifts for everyone and passes them out to everyone but me. Nothing unusual in that. He always got a kick out of giving me a hard time and beyond that he also had a reputation for the coolest gifts. As the youngest adult in the family he was just a big kid and always had gifts like slingshots, BB guns, RC cars, basically the good poo.

So anyway everyone opens their gifts from him and still nothing for me. At this point he is actually getting to me and I got really mad at him. After 30 minutes or so of teasing me he reached in his shirt pocket and produced a small paintbrush. The kind I used on models and had two dozen of. He handed it to me and said Merry Christmas.

I went into brat mode.

I wouldn't take it from him. I didn't speak to him the rest of the day. I wouldn't stay in a room if he came in. Basically I acted like a spoiled little asshole.

After a few hours time came for everyone to leave and my parents made me come and say goodbye to him at the front door. As he stepped onto the front porch he reached out and picked up a gift that he had left out there on his way in. Of course it was mine. As he handed it to me he said "I really shouldn't give you this but there's no reason for both of us to be jerks on Christmas."

Turned out to be a 3 foot long model of the USS Enterprise (the first US nuclear aircraft carrier). A very cool gift.

Never forgot the way I felt and never again got a "bad" gift. Ive gotten things that I didn't need or want but Ive always appreciated the effort and time someone else put into giving me something.
