What was the reasoning behind not trying to get closer in that 10 seconds Rivera let run off the clock before calling time out?

Because if you call a timeout what are you going to do? Run a play? What if you don't get out of bounds? Then you have no chance to even kick a field goal. They did the only thing they could do is to let it run down and use the last timeout before the FG.

That logic is in line with saying it was a bad decision to run the ball on 3rd and inches because they ended up fumbling. Just because the outcome isn't the optimal one doesn't mean the choice was wrong.

Often special teams coaching is a shared task. For example if there are a bunch of linebackers on kickoffs the linebackers coach will help out. It is more difficult to pin down the coaching acumen on special teams.
