Glad the lockout is over (assuming we got what we needed)

I'm glad to hear the lockout is over, but I hope the Bobcats and other small-market teams got what they needed to be competitive. As I understand it, the hard cap is a no-go (that's a shame) but there are new rules to increase the luxury tax penalties... I just hope the new rules are enough to dissuade teams like the Lakers and Celtics (who have piles of money laying around) from hording talent.

When the NFL lockout ended and a deal was announced, the dancing in the street registered about a 6.5 on the Richter Scale.

The NBA lockout ends and this Saturday morning people are out raking leaves and putting up holiday decorations... nobody cares.

"...it is expected to be a 10-year deal, the longest in N.B.A. history, with an option for either side to terminate it after six years. It will include a significant pay cut for players, along with shorter contracts, smaller raises and a more punitive tax system to reign in the top-spending teams.

On nearly every count, the deal favors the owners, who had sought all along to overhaul the system. The players made significant concessions, including a reduction of up to $300 million year in salaries, $3 billion over the life of the agreement.

The deal will feature a 50-50 split of revenues, but with the possibility of the players making as much as 51 percent or as little as 49, depending on whether the league exceeds or falls short of projections. The players had been earning 57 percent.

I read that teams have to spend 85% of the cap the first 2 years, how is that gonna leave us, who are gonna have like 35 mill in cap after this year? If we cant get a couple of big name guys we get pentalized? Would be lame if have to spend money in inferior players just to reach that minimum.

That probably means all the teams as a whole have to spend 85% of the cap, not each individual team.

It's not really a huge help and that's why most of the owners were against the deal, it will still pass with a 16-13 vote. Spending is very slightly curbed and the NBA has revenue sharing, but it won't stop the Lakers, Celtics and a few other teams from spending more then anyone else. No hard cap = failure for the NBA in this lockout. The Lux tax that was proposed was scrapped because the players didn't agree with the increased penalties to teams spending a lot of money. It's probably on 2 for every 1 dollar now.

I semi agree although I do fully believe that there would never have been a new CBA with a hard cap. That is the players and the owners fault.

Regardless, the Bobcats hired a GM (Cho) who (before the lockout) was/is building our team through the draft by tanking last season (and probably this one.) He specifically stated that having a couple expensive guys on a mediocre team will always net you a 7-8 playoff spot and doom your team to permanent mediocrity since you then never get a good draft pick.

Do I love this system? No. Is it our only realistic chance at a good team? Yeah unfortunately without a CP3 or insanely lucky draft pick.

The good news is there is more money for Jordan to use (from TV contract splitting etc..) and there is more of a luxury penalty for other teams. Even if it only makes a 1% difference I will never be sad my team has a 1% better of a chance to be competitive.

Cho + a young team (Kemba!) + a soon to be early draft picks + a sharper lux tax system = a better overall picture for the Bobcats than a year or 2 ago.

Not everything I wanted but not a total screw over for small market teams. That is how successful negotiating happens. I can live with it. If it doesn't work for small market teams 2-3 years from now look for the CBA to be a 6yr opt out rather than a 10.

I agree that a hard cap was unlikely, but it's still a failure for the Players and Owners. It shows me that the Players actually don't care about basketball or the fans, they don't care about anything but still being the highest paid sports athletes in the World, they should just give that money to some lower paid NFL players.

Some details on the deal are coming out.

As previously known, the deal includes the amnesty clause, which will allow teams to cut one player and not have his salary count against their cap number.

Bye bye Diop????

Yeah it has to be Diop.

I would think the Bobcats are going to try to resign Brown and hope Bismack Biyombo can get out of the contract.
