I think Smith was a VERY good returner. Again though, stats don't tell the full story. Anyone who watched Robinson every game that year would have to list his overall performance as bad. The following is based on watching games and not stats......

The rookie year for Robinson was horrible at returner.

The rookie year for Smith was a Pro Bowl season at returner.

The rookie year for Hester was a Pro Bowl season at returner.

See, stats don't really tell the truth always - you are using stats to compare a very bad returner to two very good/great ones.

Good return guys are good return guys from day 1. KR/PR isn't like other positions....the good guys don't "grow" into the role and learn it over a couple seasons.

Yea, he was a decent to good returner in his rookie season (talking about Robinson) once he started attacking the kr/pr coverage, before that it was so-so. I was mainly pointing out the fumbles though, your talking about a minimal difference in return yardage and a slight to significant advantage in td's but the other two players I listed both had over 8 turnover's there rookie years. Hester turned the ball over 3 more times then he scored his rookie season and his second season was the same. Your talking about 12 fumbles for Smith in 160 touches and 15 for Hester with around 180 or so touches. That's a fumble every 13 returns for Smith and a fumble for every 12 returns for Hester.

He doesn't have a problem with ball control and he has the potential if healthy to average 11 - 13 yards a return on punts and 26 - 27 yards a return on Kick offs. I think it the lack of fumbling more then makes up for the difference in yards and td's. This team's offense is pretty stout and just needs good Field Position so they can run the ball and control the clock to keep the defense fresh.

There is not a minimal difference between the rookie seasons of Hester/Smith in comparison to Robinson.....they blew him out of the water. There is no way to classify Robinson's rookie years as "good". You can point at stats and talk about potential but the reality is he simply wasn't very good that season.

Robinson showed weaknesses in every aspect including holding on the ball. He might not have any fumbles listed on his stat sheet.....but there were several games he had "issues" w/ it.

in regards to others making the comments about it "being about Pro Bowls".....seriously, the fact someone is trying to compare Robinson's rookie season to Hester's or Smith's is beyond laughable....and takes homersim to new levels.
