Team Needs

you're right. numbers mean nothing.

the fact that he was a rookie meant nothing.

the fact that it was more than smith that spoke highly of him and saw similarities mean nothing.

he has no chance to improve and should be cut outright and we should go ask for mark jones back. our return game will suck because ryne will be the return man and not jones.

you win.

you and I both know you can make use numbers to make almost any arguement. Robinson has done nothing to make anyone feel he is capable to handle return duties again....based on what he did his rookie year.

the Steve Smith comparison is just....well.....I really don't know what to say about that.

There are several posters on here that clearly saw the improvement in him after he talked to Fox about what he needed to do to improve. That you don"t care to acknowledge that is fine, but why are you being so verbose about it?

you already have. you think you have a better idea than what the players do.

i told you that after the bye and after he got done talking to Fox about what he needed to do he improved a lot. i showed you how he had gotten better. they let mark jones go. they didn't let ryne go.

what else can you conclude except the panthers valued ryne more than jones? why would they make that conclusion?

Yes Mark Jones last year>Ryne Robinson 2007.

But comparing a 5 year vet to a rookie, isn't quite on an even playing field.

Robinson will be out to prove himself this year, after coming off an injury and having his roster spot challenged last season even when he was healthy.

Robinson I think can be the slot receiver we need and have been looking for since Proehl left, just my opinion. He doesn't have great top end speed, but hes small, elusive, and quick with sure hands. (check his college stats if you aren't buying that). I think that is eventually where he will shine. But I think as a returner, he can only get better. He's got one of the best tutors in the skill with Steve Smith who just happens to love the kid.

I never said he didn't improve....but he started at such a low level an improvement from that position doesn't = good. I mean the majority of the year it was beyond painful to watch him....he then had 3 good returns. That isn't enough for me to think he can be our returner........after all that he had a year off b/c of injury......

they let Jones go b/c it made no sense to keep a return man of that caliber on the roster. he was just a return man. If you are going to use a roster spot for a kickoff specialist (unless it is a temp. band-aid) it has to be a MUCH better returner. That is why they let Jones go....imo.

I medicore return year + a year hurt imo doesn' t = we have found are answer to KR/PR. Carolina still needs to address the position and just saying it is Robinson's job isn't addressing the issue.

Brandon Tate.

You're welcome.

thats what i was thinking before he got injured he was considered a better WR than hakeem nicks. but because he was hurt nicks was unc only good target and ended up having a great year. aslong as he healthy tate could end up bein a realy good pickup

The only reason Mark Jones was on the team last year was because Ryne Robinson was injured and put on IR.

Also, he was a ROOKIE. Brady Quinn sat on the bench all his rookie year, yet all of you want him. WHY? "Because he has a lot of upside". Same with Ryne. Expecting a rookie to flourish at a position that takes time to learn and get a feel for and calling him out for coming up short in his ROOKIE year, even though he showed he could do it in the later part of the year... that's pretty stupid and shows impatience on your part.

If anything, the only thing Mark Jones brought was a developed vision and ability to hold onto the ball. My Only knock on Ryne is that he's had the ball jarred loose a couple of times.. Hopefully he spent some time in the weight room in his time off.

KR and QB are totally different. Name one return man in the league currently (who is considered very good) that was given the chance as a rookie to play that didn't show from day 1 he had "it". That is one of the great things about looking for a good option at returner....the results are something you see immediately when you find one.

CRA did you consider Steve Smith a good PR/KR?

First two years

PR - 89 - 834 yards - 9.37 avg - 3td - 7 fumbles

KR - 82 - 2002 yards - 24.41 avg - 2 td - 5 fumbles

8 of Steve's fumbles came in his rookie year.

Ryne averaged 23 yards on KR, and 8.7 yards on PR with 2 fumbles

Hester had 15 fumbles on KR/PR his first two years and average 24 yards on KR and a little over 13 on PR with 11 td's the first two years, five of which came in his rookie year.

So 5 td's to 8 fumbles Hester's rookie year. Hester Has 20 total fumbles on 299 touches in his first 3 years.

I think Smith was a VERY good returner. Again though, stats don't tell the full story. Anyone who watched Robinson every game that year would have to list his overall performance as bad. The following is based on watching games and not stats......

The rookie year for Robinson was horrible at returner.

The rookie year for Smith was a Pro Bowl season at returner.

The rookie year for Hester was a Pro Bowl season at returner.

See, stats don't really tell the truth always - you are using stats to compare a very bad returner to two very good/great ones.

Good return guys are good return guys from day 1. KR/PR isn't like other positions....the good guys don't "grow" into the role and learn it over a couple seasons.
