Ryne Robinson was a pretty big disappointment in '07, and given his feminine tendency to shy away from contact, I don't have too much faith in him. Step on up, Jason Carter.

he had a rough start but really came on towards the end of the year.

was it worse than jones being run out by the kicker..

Jones was average and productive. Robinson had 875 horrible returns and 3 good ones.....people put too much emphasis on those 3 and not enough on all the horrible ones.

exaggerate much?

26 KRs

30 PRs

at the beginning he was hesitant to make contact but after he got done talking to Fox he was a whole lot less hesitant and started to trust what was happening in front of him.

he really started to turn things around the 2nd half of the season.

after the bye week(7) his KR avg was 29.5 and in his last two games he had one return for 42 and another for 60. his PR average after the bye was 10.5. this was in his rookie year when he was just starting to get a feel for the game.

This was Mark Jones 5th year. Until 2007 he had predominately been used as a PR guy at the giants (his rookie year) and the bucs. it wasn't until his 4th year that he started to get it. Robinson started to get it during his first season. Is he a lock for the return position? probably not yet...but his upside is higher than Mark Jones' is, imo.

compare Jones' career stats here to robinson's here

Robinson for sure is one of the most ambitious players we have and many on the team have talked about how much they like him. Considering him a little Steve Smith is no small compliment. I have little doubt that Ryne would have matched or beaten Mark Jones stats in '08.

I'm glad we had Jones last year but i believe that Robinson can and will do better.

Thank you. That makes alot of sense. When it comes to special teams in the NFL, you want consistencey. I mean its Great if somone can return it to the house on a kickoff 2 times in a season but what happens if he fumbles 4 times. I much rather have a returner that can give us an average start of the 25 yard line with no fumbles than one who averages the 30 yd kine with two fumbles

I'll take a Mark Jones over Robinson any day. Jones produced, Robinson sucked. That said, I'll take a legit playmaker any day of the week and deal w/ the negativies over an average guy like Jones.......at least on a conservative team like Carolina.

Robinson stunk as a returner.

There has been nothing to suggest he is a "little Steve Smith". I know Smith personally likes him.......and thus he says nice things about him. Smith also talks highly of Delhomme's ability.....b/c he likes him personally.

I'm glad we had Jones last year also. It was nice to not have the worst unit in the league for a change. Robinson has given us no real reason to believe he will do better than his 1st season......saying he can do better than Jones is going a bit overboard. imo. Too much emphasis on too little.

Jones was largely Rod Smart II when it came to returns, but he wasn;t the special teamer Smart was.

Smart could take one the distance if set up.....Jones simply doesn't have the speed to take one all the way.

you're right. numbers mean nothing.

the fact that he was a rookie meant nothing.

the fact that it was more than smith that spoke highly of him and saw similarities mean nothing.

he has no chance to improve and should be cut outright and we should go ask for mark jones back. our return game will suck because ryne will be the return man and not jones.

you win.

I'd agree Smart was likely faster than Jones, but I'm not sure appreciably so.

Smart also had the benefit of having special teams guru (and colossal prick) Scott O'Brien in charge of ST at the time.
