Does anyone know why Peppers won't sign his tender?

Personally, I don't think he is worth the money and have said so long before this offseason. AK Panther and I got bashed often for saying the team should have traded him back in 07.

If you're talking about after the 2007 season, I doubt the market for him would have been that good. He was coming off a down year and on top of it had only 1 year left on his contract which would have meant some team willing to give up picks and a big contract for a guy they hoped would rebound.

I was thinking about this today. You would think that if the FO was trying to actively get him to sign and he wont, that it would leak out.

So I think there is a mutual idea to have this all set up for Draft day.

Now the 3-4 Broncos have 3 1st round draft pics (1 of them is next years) and an extra 3rd.....

something to consider.

how bout a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for Peppers :D

Why wait until draft day if that was the case?

I think there might be a much simpler explanation for why he hasn't signed than everyone believes. It may be something as basic as not wanting to participate in the mini-camps and OTA's if he is not traded, which he would have to do if he is under contract. Since there is a very real possibility that the Panthers keep him, by not signing, he is not required to attend any off-season activities, but the moment he signs, he will be under contract and obligated to attend all mandatory activities.

And he would still maintain just as much control over where he goes as he does now. Think about it, if he signs the tender, we cannot trade him to anyone he does not agree with, because nobody would accept the terms of his franchise tag (which a team would have to honor if they traded for him without signing him a new contract) while also having to pay the Panthers what they would demand. Really, signing the tender would not inhibit any of the advantages Pepper's and his agent may feel they have in getting him on another team...in fact; it would actually hasten a possible move.

Very valid points.

I've said elsewhere you can't interpret Peppers actions through the normal behavior filters. He's an offbeat personality, and as such can be rather tough to predict.

More likely scenario. Peppers' agent isn't really an agent. He has one client and really has no idea what he is doing. No one wants to negotiate with him since he has no credibility in the league. Belichek knows that the only way a deal will get done is if the GMs talk who know this business rather than Pepper's agent who is largely clueless.

Agreed, but I was encouraged when Carey said he'd no longer talk to the media on the heels of Bellichick's "sign your contract, dummy" interview. I think the principals involved have hinted to Carey that he should essentially "shut up and let the adults work things out". My hope is that he listened.

Worth noting that the bonanza the Broncos got for Jay Cutler could stiffen thee resolve of the Panthers front office to not let him go for anything less than a "knock your socks off" deal.

Bottom line though, if they get anything much for him, even if it turns out to be less than what they would have hoped for, it will still be better than nothing.

(thus, the franchise tag will have done its job)

After he signs the tender, Julius Peppers:

can say no to any of the trades.

is this true? I thought that once he signed the tender, that his contract to play for that year was essentially owned by the Panthers, and that the Panthers could then trade him to any franchise for whatever terms they found best for their organization.

Yes, but the trade would not be binding unless Peppers says that he'll play for them and signs a contract with him...

Not true.

That tender is a 1 year contract. Once signed, the panthers can trade it like any other contract. Peppers would have no say in it.

No team will make a trade for him if he says he won't play for them. Forgive my poor wording, I said yes, but I meant not if Peppers refuses the deal. I inadvertently said the deal would go thru, when I meant that Peppers could nix the deal by saying he won't play for the team. Yes, it could go thru like the Jake Plummer deal, but that does not mean the he has to play. I don't think any team will make that deal on this kind of scale again. My bad...

You mean kinda like Ken Lucas had no say in where he went????? All Pepper has to do is refuse to do a deal with the new club and its over, no trade. Same thing happened with Lucas he refused to extend his deal with the Lions, so No trade.
